I lay in a green boarder to create a darker edge to the composition to draw the viewer's eye to the center of the painting. This green will hardly be seen as "green" when I'm done as It'll be covered with more semi-transparent red, then I thick some pointillism to mix the two opposing shades to create a nice blurry soft focus effect around the bright and detailed center. And here's a look at one of the details in the center. The "mysterious Wahine" standing in the door way to the Tiki Lounge. I really like using the visual language or Tiki Culture and I think this is part of they modern mythology. She , of course won't be gray, this is just the monochromatic underpainting to work out the lights and darks. I think she will mostly be done in greens and purples when finished. more to come...
