"Riding Giants" was co-written and directed by Stacy Peralta, an award winner here for his 2001 skateboard culture documentary, "Dogtown and Z-Boys."

Peralta's new work tells some of the history of surfing but focuses on the specialty of riding mammoth waves that can tower 60 to 80 feet high over the ocean surface.

The film tells of a pack of southern California surfers led by legendary Greg Noll who pioneered the sport on the north shore of Oahu in Hawaii.

It traces surfing's evolution through the exploits of Jeff Clark on the big waves in northern California and onto a new breed of surfer like Laird Hamilton who use techniques of wind surfing and snowboarding to conquer ever bigger waves.
