PURE GREED killed it. How? When a small company made an Apple clone (Franklin if I remmeber correctly) they were sued into oblivion, apple won the court battle but sadly lost the war. I think the world of computers would have been better off with a viable competitor to the IBM PC. IBM on the other hand by genius (or was it dumb luck) embraced the clone market and the rest is history. If Apple had let others manufacture hardware they would have cleaned up in the software market
