It was a grand build-up to a disappointing conclusion. Following months of anticipation and a gala weekend preview, 15 Eastern Island moai up to 22 feet tall were ready to take their place as a unique habitat on the ocean floor. But the sinking of the Rapa Nui Reef in Deefield Beach on Sunday, June 7, went horribly wrong when the statues slid off their barge and were crushed as the costly project went topsy-turvy.
