It's time for the Tiki Oasis 16 Art Show. I started this painting a very long time ago to ensure that it would be done in time. I have also paired the painting with a mug made to look like one of the slit drum tikis. I am using a photo from Disneyland. The painting is called Scared in Disneyland. I did a sketch of my idea to use as a guide. I printed photos of tropical plants and picked out paints to match. I am doing the painting on black velvet. It really helps to have a bright light on the painting so that you can see the first layers of paint. In front is the mug that goes with the painting. I cut a piece of cardboard to help guide my paint brush as I did the painting. You can't fix errors so anything that prevents them is a good idea. Also it keeps pressure off of the fabric if your hand touches it while painting. I did the first tiki with the cardboard in place. I moved the cardboard to the side to work on the top part of the tiki. It is still supporting my hand and protecting the surface. I finished tiki one and tiki two and then I worked on tiki three. The third tiki is done. Foliage with a flash and without a flash. It needed one more touch. Bamboo painted with a brush and a pin. Done and ready to frame. Photo without a flash. Here is the matching mug that goes with the painting. Also I found a vintage frame that I thought was perfect. Here is the painting with a flash. I don't like putting my name on the front of my paintings so I do it on the back. I included the photo of the old slit drum Disney tikis that I used for my painting. I knew that having a mug that went with the painting would make a problem of how to keep them together. Then it came to me...fish net. I wrapped it around the wire picture hanger. Then I wove it into place with a black chord. I put a piece of black velvet on the frame to prevent scratching. Then I pulled the mug over the frame to rest on the black velvet. This is how it will be displayed at Tiki Oasis 16. The new owner may leave it like this or remove the mug and netting. Thank you hang10tiki for fixing my photo.
