I don’t that think that the steel ring was original to this piece. There is a 3/4 “x 5” hole drilled into the top of this lamp along with 4 screw holes although the ring was held in place with 2 screws.
I have three Trader Vic's lamps like this one and they all have the same ring.
plus a plastic tube thing, I added the shade to that plastic tube.
