I guess you could say that in the 70s and 80s tiki was underground here in Ohio.
We were not as into tiki it was just a restaurant we went to the Kahiki.
The 70s and 80s sure did no favors to the Kahiki and that may have brought about the egg roll factory and that is part of what killed the Kahiki.

We did like all the things that were tiki but much of it was not even known to us as we did not even know of a Frankoma mug or the many other tiki places that were out there.

So was the Book of Tiki Mainstream?
How about Tiki news?

The death of the Kahiki was what hipped us to the whole wide world of tiki.
Was tiki underground before we found Book of Tiki and Tiki news? to us much of tiki was.

Mainstream is what sells, I think tiki will always be a bit more popular in California as it has a stronger foothold there.

Remember when Conquistador / Mexican décor was all the rage bull fighting art etc, maybe Night of the Iguana did that but Conquistador / Mexican décor is underground right now is that a good thing?

The problem with Mainstream is that it can get so big that the cool is leached out,At Tiki Oasis people have a hard time getting tickets are some of the people that were tiki all their lives being bumped by Kim Kardashian wanna be tiki.

That is a bit over the top but this happened at the Red Head Saloon in Chicago it was cool fun then it got popular the rich famous people moved in and it was not that fun anymore.
They would give the best tables to politicians and things like that.

Don't know why but many rich and even famous people are just not that much fun.

Tiki is morphing into a new plastic cartoony cleaner tiki lite version for me anyway so the true old school tiki is kinda underground anyway.

The newer tiki fan will call places like the Mai Kai dirty and not "chic" enough, "CHIC" they call tiki bars "chic" and hip!

All right you chic tiki hipster.

What is this world coming to.
