It's obvious that there are two major camps on this issue, the Traditionalists, and the free-form catch-all crowd. While I would consider myself a Tiki Traditionalist, I can see the appeal of having an open concept of what "plays well" with a broader Tiki style. I think this is best summed up in the wide introduction of Surf Rock into the soundtrack for Tiki spaces. While I understand why this happened, it would hardly have been common to hear The Ventures playing at a Trader Vic's in their heyday. Surf is not Exotica, it is Surf. But, it is fun, escapist music all the same. I wonder sometimes if aficionados of other styles, like Edwardian Parlor Design, have this issue. Is it perhaps due to the nature of the third-wave Tiki Revival? I dunno. |
