BREAKING NEWS: Historic preservation board approves The Mai-Kai's renovation plans, clearing way for project to move forward. Landmark Polynesian restaurant allowed to remove old building, make other enhancements in sweeping plan to reimagine 66-year-old, 2.7-acre property. Final approval could come on Jan. 26. At The Mai-Kai on Jan. 6, a notice from the city of Oakland Park announces the upcoming development plan for the historic site. The damaged Bora Bora building, located to the north of the main entrance driveway, is seen on Jan. 6. Removal of the abandoned building was approved by the city of Oakland Park's Historic Preservation Board on Jan. 11. Artistic renderings captured from the Jan. 11 meeting show details of the restoration of The Mai-Kai's wooden entry bridge by Perry-Becker Design. A rendering by Kravit Architectural Associates shows the existing east side of The Mai-Kai (top) along with the planned version featuring the new event space (bottom). Renderings by "Typhoon Tommy" Allsmiller show The Mai-Kai's proposed new event space, which is to be built in the southeast corner of the property and utilize the building that now houses the Chinese ovens.
