They have very fleshy roots and if they have gone round and round in a small pot it will not thrive even if planted in the open soil. Dividing it was the best thing to do and it responded accordingly. The plants come from Africa and will tolerate frost and droughts once established. Back as a teen in a rural area I ordered and grew one in a very cold winter area with lots of frosts. (No snow.) It flowered well in the hot summer and was a real novelty then. No one had seen them before.
