🌴 🎶 🍹 🌺 🤙 My wife and I headed over to Orlando a week ago for the HŌʻIKE HAWAIʻI HULA COMPETITION. A two-day Hawaiian hula competition focusing on the unique cultural dance traditions, costumes, and music styles of the islands of Hawai’i, Tahiti, Samoa, New Zealand and Tonga. Groups from all parts of the U.S. and abroad come to showcase their talents and skills while sharing their love for the culture. We met up with a man I've known and performed with since the '60s, legendary knife dancer Barney "Chief Faalia" Lee. 🥰 Saturday was dedicated to the dances of the hula, both ʻAuana(modern) and Kahiko(ancient). There are four age categories: A: 5-11, B: 12-17, C: 18-49 and D: 50+ Sunday was the Tahitian dances of Aloha kākou! Samoan, Māori, Tahiti and Tonga. Both days included groups and solos along with live musicians, no tapes. GOOD TIMES! 🌴 🎶 🍹 🌺 🤙 [ Edited by nibblegribitz on 2023-07-31 15:49:23 ] [ Edited by nibblegribitz on 2023-07-31 15:49:43 ] [ Edited by nibblegribitz on 2023-07-31 15:50:10 ] |
