We finally made it here tonight and I’m a bit underwhelmed. I guess LA doesn’t have a great mix of atmosphere and great drinks (and food on top of that) so I guess it’s a nice mixture of those. But I can think of better examples in Broken Compass (Burbank) and Bamboo Club (Long Beach.)

The atmosphere was OK but didn’t feel planned or authentic. The lamps and tikis all felt off the shelf and bought, not with the wow factor of other bars like False Idol or Undertow for example. I recognized several of the lamp and carving artists and I don’t want to disparage their work, but it lacked a central focal point or signature piece as a design to the place. It also didn’t have a theme, which usually doesn’t bother me but did in the absence of defining art pieces.

The drinks were fine but not great. I was recently knocked out by the drinks at Lost Voyage (Anaheim.) Great flavors, layers, and subtlety that I didn’t get here. Lucky Tiki had several kitschy drinks that came in a treasure chest, or came with a shovel to dig for treasure, or an Elvis drink served with a song and glasses with sideburns, etc. I guess the servers need to practice their acting chops between auditions. The drinks weren’t terrible but I could make at least as good at home.

Lucky Tiki was nice and ticked all the boxes but I wouldn’t go back.
