The short version: we now have the obituary. We have the clientele list. We have confirmation of where the recipe stood at the time of his death. And we have a rare book dealer's archive that turned up some surviving ephemera — including two printed labels for the Rainbow Cocktail itself — that fills in a few gaps the record had left open. Some of what's in this piece will be familiar if you've been following the trail. Some of it won't. The piece goes back further than most accounts do, tracks the recipe through every version of the room, and lands somewhere definitive on what we actually know versus what's been speculation. The recipe is still gone. But we know a lot more about the man who kept it that way — and why nobody was ever going to get it. I've been working on this for over a year.
