30 YEARS of CONTEMPORARY TIKI ART Group Invitational Exhibition in Collaboration with Otto von Stroheim of Tiki Oasis La Luz de Jesus Gallery 4633 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90027 (323) 666-7667 Featuring: Shag, Bosko, Crazy Al, Dawn Frasier, Ken Ruzic, Big Toe, Mookie, Ken Pleasant, Atomikitty, Doug Horne, Tiki Shark, Eric October, Kevin Kidney & Jody Daily, Isabel Samaras and many others. As the year 1996 sat on the precipice of the turn of "Y2K" and the end of the 20th Century, La Luz de Jesus Gallery launched a group show, curated by Otto von Stroheim. 21st Century Tiki that was the first ever group show dedicated solely to the subject of Tiki. The landmark exhibition set the tone for the Tiki revival inspiring dozens of group Tiki art shows across the country over the following years. The show featured a rare, large scale painting by renowned artist Mark Ryden and introduced The Artist SHAG who went on to become the most famous and prolific Tiki artist in the world. Twenty one years later, for the 21st Anniversary of the 21st Century Tiki exhibition, La Luz Gallery went big. This show expanded upon expectations of the first Tiki group show by hosting a book release, showcasing historical pieces from the heyday of Tiki Style, and presenting new works by seasoned Tiki artists but also continued to present new works by upcoming artists. The release of The Art of Tiki, a hardcover book authored by Tiki revival founder Sven Kirsten with contributions from Otto von Stroheim and Jordan Reichek marked another chapter in Kirsten's groundbreaking documentation of Tiki style and became the top selling book for the gallery's La Luz de Jesus Press publishing imprint. The anniversary show also has the distinction of being one of the cornerstones for the most spectacular modern Tiki bar in America - Max's South Seas Hideaway in Grand Rapids, MI. Max's is decorated with thousands of artifacts expertly embedded into a variety of Tiki Style motifs in multiple rooms on three floors to present the largest collection of historic and new Tiki art in one setting anywhere in the world. All of the vintage artifacts shown in the 21st Anniversary show were bought by Max's owner Mark and are now placed throughout the bar. For the 30th anniversary of the original exhibition, La Luz Gallery and Otto von Stroheim have teamed up to present new works from many of the original contributors as well as showcasing some artists new to the Tiki scene. This show cements the reputation of the Tiki art scene and proves that it has survived and thrived in the past 30 years becoming an accepted genre of its own in the art world rather than a subgenre of other American art movements such as Lowbrow Art or Pop Surrealism. Come see new works by your favorite Tiki artists and discover new artists embracing the style. It is the last Tiki group show of the year in the U.S.
