Well, Shag himself will be the first one to tell you that he doesn't consider his work to be "Fine Art". It is most definitely Pop Art, and while it may lack the commentary and depth of a Lichtenstein, for example, it certainly espouses the playful and mass-reproduction aesthetic of Pop Art. I think the closest analogous artist to Shag is probably Keith Haring, who was also tuned in to the marketing possiblities of his work. There is Haring merchandise everywhere, and no one accuses him of being a sellout. No, I doubt the impressionists would have made or condoned business card holders, but Pop Art is different in its approach and ideals. -martin |
