Folks'll probably hate me for saying this, but I find there's a lot in common with Tiki culture and the Dead scene. There's music, iconography, intoxicants, drumming, fashion, new friendships formed from the common interest, history, folks who specialize in the different subsets of the theme, travel to events in different parts of the country, and even Aloha (or at least the idea of it). I realize all "scenes" have things in common, but I find Tiki/Dead to have a lot in common.

As far as Phish goes, I've seen 'em thrice, and felt like "been there, done that". It's like GD in bizzarro world, and many of you will laugh reading this, but I find them soulless in comparison to the GD.
