I recieved an email from Otto last week with the details for the tiki fete being held again this summer in Palm Springs at the Tropics Hotel. I flew out last year from Denver and had a blast. I'll be back again for sure this year. The Tropics is a fantastic setting for all of us tiki geeks to gather and spend the weekend. BTW, after the remodel, the rooms at the Tropics are really nice. Hope to see all tiki centralites there. |

I will be turning the big 3-0 that week and thought a trip out there would be the perfect gift to myself, but unfortunately the flight from Toronto will run about 800 bucks or more... too much, I'm afraid. I checked Travelocity and my jaw hit the floor! And I don't think the air miles fairy will smile upon me twice in one year... Would have been a blast to see you all again... sniff! |

is there some website or thread or something somewhere that I can find out about these things as early as possible? It seems I'm always missing them? The exotica mailing list perhaps? |

Otto has a "tiki events" mailing list he sends out emails to every week, generally the only places where stuff is going on is SF, LA and NYC. Sign up on http://tikinews.com [ Edited by: kahukini on 2002-04-22 06:44 ] |

The Palm Springs Tiki gig really sounds great! Unfortunatly I'm such as tiki junkie my only thought regarding that weekend is Cruz's 'DA SHOW' which I'm sure you all know is a big yard sale of all things Tiki and Surf. In addition I'm picking up a 6 piece set of vintage koa furniture on that Friday we purchased while in Honolulu. It arrives in a container and I can't wait to stuff it into our little house. Oh well, I'm sure there'll be other events. Have fun and suck down a few mai tai's for someone you've never actually met but who will be there in spirit (40 proof that is!). |

Is DA SHOW a "yard sale" or a Christie's auction? Prices are the same, no? |

On the Caliete Tropics homepage it still shows the date as 2001 for this event. If anyone can inform them that would be good. I am working on going with a friend from Atlanta. Aloha, |

To answer Kahukini's question: The answer is 'yes' and 'no'. Aloha Cruz is expensive, yes. However their Hawaiiana show DA SHOW is an annual Hawaiiana "swap meet." Hawaiiana and Tiki vendors from all over the country come down to show their wares. I went last year and found all kinds of cool stuff. Yeah, some of it might be pricey but not all of it. Most of all, its a fun atmosphere. There's live Hawaiian music and even Hawaiian food. I mean how many events can you go to where every vendor is selling something that's either tiki or hawaiiana? You can find just about anything the Polynesian Pop era from rattan furniture to classic Trader Vic's tiki mugs. |

There is a web site for Cruz's DA Show. I have gone to the show it is a hoot. Get there early to get the bargains. The last day is also good for the items that did not sell. |

Darn, I was not aware of that trade show happening at the same weekend...Well, maybe it's here where the Hawaiiana collectors and the Tiki devotees get seperated...: Apart from my poolside Witco book preview slideshow, the screeening of another Hawaiian Eye episode, and various musical acts, WE will have as our vendors: Toes On The Nose, with SHAG signing his new shirts; [ Edited by: bigbrotiki on 2002-04-23 23:52 ] |

I forwarded them your request, they are still working on the final invite card text, but they should get their website up to speed. |

...also, as long as the TIKI OASIS 2002 art and info is not up on the Caliente Tropics site, you can click on "Packages" or "Online Availability" to find out their deals. Don't get turned off by their "Package" lingo, they're in the travel biz, and that's what they do. Just ask them you want a room at an event discount. |

It's official! I'm going there. With the significant otter. Who posts under a different name here to disguise the fact that she's my otter. Anyway-- question: any other cute googie motels that we could stay at down there too? We have a room booked at the Caliente Tropics, but it might be fun to do a night elsewhere before or after. Anybody know of other cute places down there? |

I am glad that I will finally be able to meet Mig. There is an interesting mid-century hotel there, Ballantines Movie Colony. It was designed by Albert Frey, so it has a pedigree. I don't think the exterior is really googie, though. The interiors are all mid-century; they went out of their way to find Eames furniture and all sorts of period pieces of that nature. Here is a link: http://www.ballantineshotels.com/moviecolony/palmspringstravelwriterssay.htm But if I were you, I'd spend all my lodging money at the Tropics - keep 'em healthy! |
