"OSLO (Reuters) - A replica of the Kon-Tiki balsa raft will sail the Pacific in 2005 to study mounting environmental threats to the oceans since Thor Heyerdahl made his daredevil 1947 voyage, organizers said on Monday."

And if anybody is interested, they need a navigator...

UPDATE

"Efforts to mount a new Kon-Tiki expedition over the Pacific Ocean may be delayed by as much as a year. Organizers have lost funding from sponsors after the tsunami catastrophe in South Asia."

Anyone who hasn't read the original book should...it is truly fascinating. The photo pictorials and treatise on shark fishing alone is well worth a trip to ye olde book shop.

Very cool- it sounds like they will be sending back pictures to post on the internet. I am planning to reread the book- I read it when I was about ten.

This is soooooo exciting! Thanks for the post TikiGardener.

The award-winning movie/documentry about it is awesome as well.

The one question remains: Will the Kon-Tiki have to be towed past the coastline currents, like last time, or will it be able to sail directly from the coastline, as the ancient mariners would have done?

Regardless, the Kon Tiki is doning what the Hokule'a of Hawaii has done.

Since 1975, Polynesian Voyaging Society has built and launched two replicas of ancient canoes--1. Hokule'a and Hawai'iloa--and completed six voyages to the South Pacific to retrace migration routes and recover traditional canoe-building and wayfinding (non-instrument navigation) arts

I read the book also when I was a kid but last weekend I found a hard copy with dust jacket and I'm going to start reading it tomorrow.

Such a great book. If you like that sort of thing you should read, "Shackeltons Adventure." Takes place in a very different part of the world but equally as interesting.

eddie would go
