Going to Oasis V? Yes, folks, as if there wasn’t already enough stuff going on to keep your rum-addled brain occupied, we proudly introduce: The 1st Annual TikiCentral OASIS CRAWL!! Have you ever been to one of those bars that had a ‘booze cruise’ or ‘brews cruise’ type set up? Y’know, where you get a special card, and any time you order a certain drink they stamp or sign that space on your card, encouraging you to get all the spaces filled by a certain point and then giving you a prize of some sort? No? Well then listen up! There will be many fantastic mixologists in attendance at Oasis V, and a good number of them will be mixing drinks in their rooms at one point or another; Many of them would be more than happy to have you over and share some libations with you. This effectively makes the entire Caliente Tropics (and additional hotels) like one big bar, split up into many small locations! All you need to do to participate in the Oasis Crawl is get yourself an official drink card, visit the predesignated rooms at predesignated posted ‘serving hours’, have a drink and hang out for a bit, get your card signed and move on! What could be more simple, more fun, and more CHALLENGING! Challenging? Well, in your quest to get your card filled, say you get to a room and the host has already run out of drinks, or you arrive after the hosts serving hours? TOUGH – no drink for you! Or what if TWO Room Hosts are serving at the same time?? Indeed, it will take skill, planning and incredible intestinal fortitude to crawl your way to the finish! There are two ways to play: being a ‘Room Host’ and being a ‘Crawler’ (or both!) Room Hosts: Since you are the ones who will make this work, you get basically the freedom to make all the decisions yourselves. YOUR choice of drink (Cocktail? Beer? Shot? Tap water?), YOUR choice of ingredients (Top shelf booze? Bacardi? Pabst Blue Ribbon?); YOUR choice of quantity (Full drink? Sample? Sip?); and of course YOUR choice of ‘serving hour(s) and day(s)’ (Friday from 4pm to 6pm? Saturday from 7am to 7:15am? Midnight Friday to Noon Sunday?). Simply post your hours on your door (Discretely! Big banners are not necessary – Crawlers will find you easily enough…) and be ready to serve when folks come a-knockin’! Crawlers: We want to try to keep this weekend-long event very low-key and limited to TikiCentral folks as much as possible, so: NO CARD – NO DRINKS! How do you get a card? After we have a good idea of who’s hosting, we’ll make up the cards and post a link here on this thread to an online hosting site. Go to the site, download and print out the card yourself and bring it with you to Oasis! We’ll provide you with a plastic slipcover to protect your card from the elements, if you’d like. (Alnshely will have them for you in Room 135 – lanyards, too!) When you arrive, take a tour of the grounds and look for posted hours on doors and plan accordingly to show up there at those times! This is an excellent chance to meet some new folks while you taste some specialty drinks, so hang out and chat for a bit, and be sure to get them to sign your card before you leave! All we ask of Crawlers is that you be respectful of Room Hosts, their posted hours and the complimentary service they are providing you! (Tipping of Room Hosts is completely optional, and we encourage you to patronize the Reef Bar for the bulk of your drinking needs!) But wait – what about prizes? Prizes, you say? What – getting a bunch of free drinks, meeting some of the best folks on the planet and getting a great custom-signed Oasis V souvenir drink card not good enough for you? Well, tell you what: after Oasis, post how many places YOU visited, and whoever got the most will get honor and fame forever. Plus maybe we’ll take up a collection to help you get a new liver. Maybe. IMPORTANT: I know this is pretty late notice, but we need to know who’s interested in being a Room Host as soon as possible so we can get the cards made up! Reply to this thread if you're interested – since many folks don’t know their room number yet, the cards we make will just have your TC name on it. (BTW - this is also open to folks staying at any of the other hotels too – you don’t have to be staying at the Caliente to be a Room Host! Just let us know where to look for you…) If you know your room number and the hours/drink you plan on serving, that would be helpful, but isn’t necessary right now. Additionally, if you plan on being a Crawler (and really - who wouldn’t??), let us know you’re interested as well. It will give Room Hosts an idea of how many visitors they might have and give us a heads up about how many slipcovers/lanyards we’ll need to provide. If you have any questions, ask here or feel free to PM Doctor Z, Martiki or Alnshely! Okole Maluna! :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: Doctor Z [ Edited by: Doctor Z on 2005-04-26 20:53 ] [ Edited by: Doctor Z on 2005-05-03 19:37 ] |

Let me be the first - I'll host! At the suggestion of Dr. Z, I'll be hauling down a Tiki Bar. Howz Friday from 4pm - 6pm sound? I'll hang up a sign in the window with the hours and make a call to the Caliente. If they can give me the room # I'll post asap. Hey Z, or anyone...send me a recipe big enough for a pitcher...I'm a bourbon on the rocks guy, so I'll try my best. |

I'm willing to mix, but I'm at the Vagabond, not at the Tropics. If somebody with a room at the Tropics wants to sponsor me then we can do that. Otherwise, a walk to the Vagabond will be necessary. The drink I am considering is the Suffering Bastard. |

This is a great idea, and I will definitely be "crawling" (hands and knees) after the first first few drinks. I've been lucky enough to have drinks prepared by Dr. Z and by Al, and they are both master mixologists! They don't serve the cheap stuff either - only top shelf ingredients! Keep that in mind as you pass by the tip jar. |

Count me in as a mixin' fool! I've gotten clearance from The Maikai Gents Featuring The Mysterious Miss Mauna Loa to debut an original cocktail created especially for them by none other than Jeff "Beachbum" Berry. The recipe for which can only be found in the liner notes of their new CD (debuting at Oasis). It is delish and will get your hula hips swaying in no time! I will be able to furnish the grog, but not the room. Would some kind soul be able to let me pour a few rounds on Saturday afternoon or Saturday after 7:00PM? Let me know via post or e-mail. -Weird Uncle Tiki |

Not sure exactly when it'll go down, probably sometime Friday night. I'm at the Caliente Tropics, on the noisy side, probably second floor near Room 135. |

Poison Ivy, The "Entire" Oasis is a venue for "everyone" to participate. It has large open areas for a thousand people to congregate. Unfortunately, our side parties are just that... Side parties. A side party cannot logistically accomodate everyone who attends the event so therefore we must find some way to limit the number of folks who just want to show up and get free drinks. In past years, there has been a leak of information that guides lots and lots of people to ONE persons room. That person (or small group of persons) ends up footing the bill for alcohol for a bunch of strangers when the intent was to have an intimate gathering of known friends. These rooms can easily be maxed out with as little as 30 people. When word has it there is a "party" in one room, its just too many people to fit. Besides, being an active participant on Tiki Central takes effort and time. Many of us read and POST almost daily THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE YEAR NOT JUST WHEN OASIS ROLLS AROUND. We take the time to get to know other Tiki Central members by attending other organized events, home parties, casual get togethers etc. We email eachother, catch up with a phone call, give gifts, etc.. We do love meeting new tiki fans. We were ALL new at one point in time. The issue arises when the size of the "core" group gets so large that we can no longer just extend an invitation to everyone. Pretty soon you have 150 people hanging out in or around your room and its just not fun. Stolen stuff, broken stuff, hurt feelings, police, and feeding free booze to everyone. I am not the organizer of this fine mini crawl and I do not decide who gets in and who doesnt but I am guessing that this was the thought process behind the ID cards. We want folks to stick around and contribute not just show up and drain it. |
