What's Wrong With a Tacky Tiki

This Saturday, June 11, the Auckland Art Museum in New Zealand will open a new tiki art show, that will trace the history of tiki from the 1500's to today's current kitsch representations. The following is fascinating article about this show, titled 'What's Wrong With a Tacky Tiki'

Dick Frizzell, one of the artists interviewed in the above article, did a neat piece titled 'From Mickey to Tiki Tu Meke' that transforms the face of Mickey Mouse into a tiki face. That image can be found as a thumbnail near the bottom of the Museum's Print shop

I hope at least a few of us can make it to this show.

Here is another article on the new Auckland tiki exhibit - this one tells about a connection between tiki and the Beatles

Thats a neat picture of the Beatles - I had never seen it before.

Earlier today, I happened to see a guy walking with a t-shirt from the Auckland Art Museum. This reminded me to check the museum's website - they have a short listing of the new tiki exhibit, along with a picture of some tiki lollipops.

I took it at the Te Papa Museum in Wellington. I felt a little silly taking a picture of a picture, but then I had already done so many silly things in New Zealand, I figured one more wouldn't kill me.

I wish that I had made it to the Auckland Art Museum. I didn't spend a whole lot of time in Auckland though. Maybe next time.
