The Sons of Hawaii by Eddie Kamae

If you like Hawaiian music, not hapa haole but, real hawaiian music. You have got to see the DVD "The Sons of Hawaii."
It is AWESOME!! I rented it from Netflix, here is their synopsis:

Formed in 1960 by ukulele player Eddie Kamae, the legendary Hawaiian band Sons of Hawaii purveyed the sounds of traditional island music for well over 30 years. This documentary chronicles the band's history--and their role in preserving native Hawaiian culture--through interviews, archival footage, and musical performances.

With lots of footage of Ukulele virtuoso Eddie Kamae, Legendary slack key player Gabby Pahinui, Bass palying master Joe "Pops" Marshall, multi talented Moe Keale and David "Feet" Rogers one of ther greatest slack key players ever, This DVD is nothing short of inspirational! Check it out!

Just got it and a Braddah Iz CD off Amazon.

The Sons of Hawaii were indeed a Hawaiian band in the truest sense of the word.

Gabby Pahinu'i was so named because of his love for gabardine pants.

David "feets" Rodgers was so named because of his agility on the football field.

Most of the great Hawaiian musicians passed away in a financial state far from rich.

My impression from the DVD was that through their music and Eddie's tireless efforts they literally saved Hawaiian music from near extinction. Eddie would go into the country, find the old timers and have their songs recordered, transcribed and translated. Together they brought the music back to the Hawaiian people and helped instill a new Hawaiian pride in all generations of Hawaiians. I 'll tell you what, if some of those tunes don't make your eyes start watering because of their timeless beauty, you are dead and breathing. The way Eddie tells it, that music healed Gabby and an entire culture.

Pablus, you can't go wrong with IZ, When I was on my trip, I would be in a store and would hear a tourist ask a clerk "What is a good Hawaiian music CD?" Everytime they said Braddah IZ! Seriously, i heard that conversation at least four or five times.
Another good DVD is IZ, a Man and his Music.

I hear ya' Chongolio! I picked up the "Folk Music of Hawaii: Sons of Hawaii" CD a couple of years ago in Hawaii (and have since found a copy on vinyl) and was amazed.

I just got Uncle Gabby's album "Gabby" and have it in heavy rotation on iTunes. If you buy one CD for the summer, this should be the one.

try reading eddie kamae's "hawaiian son". excellent! i liked it better than the dvd.

I highly recommend both the DVD and book for anyone with interest in Hawaiian music. The book tells much more story and the film lets you hear the words and music. Great companions to one another. Now... Eddie Kamae will be appearing in Marin County, California on October 14 and 15. You just gotta see him! More information is on this post:

Eddie Kamae will be in Santa Cruz, this Wednesday, October 12th at the Rio Theater at 7:00 to show his new film, "Keepers of the Flame", a profile of three Hawaiian women - Mary Kawena Pukui, 'Iolani Luahini and Edith Kanaka'ole - who were instrumental in saving native Hawaiian culture during a time when it was threatened with annihilation. Eddie is a founding member of the Sons of Hawaii in the 1960s who recorded landmark albums based on many of the teachings of these three women. Eddie will perform with Ocean Kawili for part of the night. My Friend Vern from our local Hawaiian band Huna Wai was asked to play slack key for Eddie. Needless to say Vern is stoked and honored to be given the opportunity.
