Just wondering, who on this board is actually Hawaiian?? A bit curious.

I don't think you'll find too many actual Native Hawaiians into "tiki - Polynesian pop." It's pretty much an imported concept in Hawaii. I would say it's comparable to African Americans collecting "Aunt Jemima" figurines..you'll find a few, but not too many.

I was not aware that we had to be Hawaiian, when you say "actually Hawaiian" what do you mean?

I lived in Hawaii as a haole
navy brat in the early 70s. My oldest memories, the images I first began assembling to conceive of the world around me were those of Oahu.

Then, at age 5 I was violently moved to IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO!

Anyway. Not Hawaiian. No. 5/8ths Portuguese though. From the Azores (island of Pico)! A whole different archipelago.

It would seem that "Tiki" is a predominently caucasian preocupation. After all if you were Polynesian , Tiki would not be exotic, nor would it be pop. It would be boring everyday life.

Maybe slightly less than the number of rosary-owning Goths that are actually practising Catholics and slightly more than the number of actual superheroes attending the ComicCon?

And gee, no one's ever tried to make this point before, don't we all feel a little silly for not being actually Hawaiian?

I used to ask the same innocent question among our tiki gatherings. Who is Polynesian/Hawaiian among us? But it's not about race, it's about our adoption of a culture, of Love and Aloha. Hang loose, stay positive.

Surely if this is the case, Polynesian Pop is mainly an American caucasian preocupation as it is part of Americana.
And most on this website are American, so it should not be that exotic, therefore boring to you guys.

Tiki is like the tradition that everyone is a litle bit Irish on St. Patty's Day. In the world of Tiki, everyone is a little bit Polynesian. And you don't have to actually be Hawaiian or Irish to get drunk.

I was born at Tripler hospital in Pearl City - does that count? Other than that I'm 100% mutt.

I thought it was understood that "Tiki" was a mainlanders interpretation of polynesia that became popular nostalgia.

Tiki, like pizza or sushi, can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of the background, right?

With that said, I'm Filipino. I lived on Oahu long enough to rate a "Kama'aina" sticker on my ID and to know that the locals see tiki so much that it would be like me setting up a shrine to gas stations in my basement or displaying a construction horse in my yard.

Not necessarily, speaking on behalf of myself and someothers - TikiDiablo immediately comes to mind.
I've also seen a "rainbow coalition" of folks at Tiki Ti or the Purple Orchid.

However, this may reflect local demography more than anything else.

Although, with an endorsement from someone like Snoop Dogg, who knows?

Maybe, but not necessarily.

Most Polynesians live urban areas, like Honolulu, Oahu, or Carson, California. They also may have forgotten native tounges, pre-contact stories of the gods and the true meaings of tiki.

A visit to the Marquesas, for example, to see tiki in its original area, may be equally exotic for them as it would be for most of us.

As far as Pop, I am sure the son of the Polynesian auntie selling leis at Tiki's on Waikiki realizes he is walking into a neuvo or pop tiki establishment, as opposed to the Place of Refuge on the Big Island.

Although you can put many nationalities in front of "American" because I'm quite the mutt. I was born in America and am damn proud of it. 100% American

When travleing internationally there is little question of my country of origin, no matter how I try.
