How to split a log? - Tiki Carving

I have been considering slicing a log in half along the length to end up with two log length pieces with a flat side on the reverse. I figured after carving the tiki on the round side I could scoop out some of the core (to reduce weight) leaving a piece that has a crescent moon profile. The goal is to have something that could be hung up on a wall. Has anyone done something similar to this before? If so any advice on splitting or cutting the log in such a way to achieve a centered cut? If I was more experienced with a chainsaw I could wing it but I fear I may end up with an angled cut or two uneven pieces. If I had a saw mill or knew Snidley Whiplash this would be much simpler. :)
