One of my favorite bands. Used to see them on the Cabaret circuit in Philly many years ago. So many great gigs. They were so accessible to their fans too. I spoke with Ed Cassidy for a long time one day after Randy's untimely death, drowning after successfully rescuing his son Quinn from a riptide near their home on Molokai. They were so close.

I have that problem, too. Right now if I pull out 10 songs at random on my iPod 99% of the time one is Korla Pandit, "Mississippi" Fred McDowell, Lee "Scratch" Perry and/or The Fall.

Whew! I decided to to stop until one of my transferred 78s came up...

Man - between the heavy metal cheese-butt rock, Disney attraction sound effects and 80s synth-horrors, my iPod is a truely schzophrenic experience...

After watching last weeks Soprano episode that concluded with a John Doe / Exene song "The 4th of July" I've been listening to a lot of X lately. I forgot how much I loved those guys. The offbeat mixture of John & Exene's voices is somehow edgy and comforting at the same time, kinda like a Black 'n Tan.

I love that song too. It was written by Dave Alvin for the Blasters before he joined X. Another amazing singer/songwriter who gets lost in the music industry weeds...

Here's what happened when I hit shuffle on my 'pod

  1. "Pete, King of the Detectives" - Big Black
Tight & compressed guitars, another shallow psychological study, more whining lyrics repeated 'til they gain weight & it all means more than this sounds like.

  2. "Mexicla" - Queens of the Stone Age
Great guitars, and Coke with real sugar, sex, death, and gasoline!

  3. "Ladyflash" The Go! Team
Coolness! An incredible collection of Pop hooks, from Northern Soul, American Soul, Doubled Drummers, and a singer straight outta the Wall O'Sound!

  4. "Gnome the Second" - Gong
Weirdo Hippy Space freakout, mercifully only 26 seconds long. It only sticks around long enough to amuse, not long enough to annoy.

  5. "Black Mass" - Les Baxter
From my 3rd or Fourth favorite H.P. Lovecraft-adapted movie, The Dunwich Horror, starring Dean Stockwell & Sandra Dee!

  6. "This Here Giraffe" - The Flaming Lips
Typical Lips, but I like the understated birdcalls & tasteful xylophone.

  7. "Along the Banks of the River" - Tortoise
Moody, Jazzy soundtrack music, I can almost name the movie it comes from... but it doesn't.

  8. "Lonesome Cowbuy Burt" - Frank Zappa
"Hi Burt!" This and "Half a Dozen Provacative Squats" seem to be the only tracks from 200 Motels that turn up on shuffle.

  9. "Evil Brain Rejector" - Lee "Scratch" Perry
This sounds like two little Jamacans are standing on your shoulders rapping about totally different things, at the same time, over old soul records.

  10. "Faded from the Winter" - Iron & Wine
Quiet guitars, subdued voices singing that always seems to be saying something sad even when they're not (although they are here).
