And even though it's hard to think about it now this was also a great New Wave song:

Police-Message In A Bottle

Don't leave this out:

The Suburban Lawns - Janitor

Question: Who wrote that early 80's song called "Norman Bates", or something like that? The only lyrics I remember are, " :music: My name is Norman Bates. I'm just a normal guy :music: "

"If you leave"...Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark

P.S. I recently downloaded music from a band called Nouvelle Vague off of itunes. They do covers of a lot of new wave songs (ex. Killing moon, Making plans for Nigel, etc.), but with kind of a bossa nova/ lounge feel. Some of the covers are better than others, but I think a lot of them are pretty cool.

P.S I saw this "music video" in the 70's at the drive-in between movies. It completely changed my way of thinking.

I forgot all about that song...I LOVED Devo! Wore out my first album, had to buy another...
I have to say it's difficult to name just one or two songs, remembering one leads to another, to another...

Wow Sabu, I was totally going to list Propaganda too, but as you can see I was getting a little carried away as it was. And Sweetpea, I didn't know you were a Sylvian fan. That makes you the third fan on TC I've discovered. Who knew! And yes, I do like Nightporter too, just didn't think it was their most "New Wave" song.

P

I vote for Devo as well. We are Devo.

(or "It's a Beautiful World")

WOOOHOOO! Who remembers watching "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles on MTV?

:music: "Puts On Parachutes Pants, Plastic bangle bracelets & Largest earrings I have ever owned!" Hard to pick 1 , I could make a huge list, but I won't. (bet your glad) I have to agree no matter how popular now, I do think Modern English's " I Melt with You" was the best & most sentimental to me NOW.

The Fanatic -FELONY *these guys practiced across the street from the "Jack in the Box" I worked at
(for 3 mo. 1st job) in the back of their fathers barber shop on Chatsworth St. in Granada Hills Ca. I had a band too & thought they were Hip & hungry too, we fed them daily for free of course. Wonder where they are now?

Here's 20/20's report on 'New Wave' from 1979 on YouTube

I'm pretty darn sure I saw this when it aired originally, and was no doubt curious as hell. The reporter has a few facts mixed up: Punk music 'born in Britain'...don't think so. And is it my imagination or did the media take the things that young people were doing, musically that is, more seriously than they do today? I think older people were confounded by some of this stuff. Same for the music in the 60s. Could that possibly happen today? My vote is NOPE!

Not a great New Wave song but a GREAT New Wave (and Punk) show. Damn, I miss 'Night Flight' on the USA Network.

I grew up listening to Rock and heavy metal from Jr high on.
but before I got into Music on my own I was hanging out with my Unkle sometimes, and he was in high school here in So. Cal. and listening to KROQ alot. When the Heavy Metal station here in LA went off the air in the early 90's I switched over the KROQ as they were playing grunge and stuff like that. But at lunch and sometimes on the weekends they'd do the flashacks to the 80's. I remembered all the 80's new wave stuff, and went and picked up some of the new wave comps.
and one of my favorites was Oingo Boingo, I saw them 6 times before they broke up and got all their cd's and some 45's and 10 in reocrds too.
Also like Talking Heads and Wall of Voodoo, but don't have alot of thier stuff.

So I really liked the idea behind this thread, so I put a little time in sorting through my MP3 collection and came up with the following list. I know it’s missing many great bands and many great songs and given the length, I kept it down to two songs at the most for each artist or group.

I hope this doesn’t kill the thread, but actually causes you to think of other songs you might have forgotten about.
