Question: Who wrote that early 80's song called "Norman Bates", or something like that? The only lyrics I remember are, " :music: My name is Norman Bates. I'm just a normal guy :music: " |

"If you leave"...Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark P.S. I recently downloaded music from a band called Nouvelle Vague off of itunes. They do covers of a lot of new wave songs (ex. Killing moon, Making plans for Nigel, etc.), but with kind of a bossa nova/ lounge feel. Some of the covers are better than others, but I think a lot of them are pretty cool. |

Wow Sabu, I was totally going to list Propaganda too, but as you can see I was getting a little carried away as it was. And Sweetpea, I didn't know you were a Sylvian fan. That makes you the third fan on TC I've discovered. Who knew! And yes, I do like Nightporter too, just didn't think it was their most "New Wave" song. |

:music: "Puts On Parachutes Pants, Plastic bangle bracelets & Largest earrings I have ever owned!" Hard to pick 1 , I could make a huge list, but I won't. (bet your glad) I have to agree no matter how popular now, I do think Modern English's " I Melt with You" was the best & most sentimental to me NOW. The Fanatic -FELONY *these guys practiced across the street from the "Jack in the Box" I worked at Save it for Later - The English Beat Love Song - The Cure Steppin' Out - Joe Jackson Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears Time clock of the Heart - Culture Club ( more pop, but I must make mention, it is my husbands & mine "Date Song" ahhh shucks  Goody Two Shoes - Adam Ant Everyday I Write The Book - Elvis Costello True - Spandau Ballet another date song (not my husband so shhhhh... teehee  ) |

Here's 20/20's report on 'New Wave' from 1979 on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtURGH2K26A&mode=related&search= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W636Iwx7-hk&mode=related&search= I'm pretty darn sure I saw this when it aired originally, and was no doubt curious as hell. The reporter has a few facts mixed up: Punk music 'born in Britain'...don't think so. And is it my imagination or did the media take the things that young people were doing, musically that is, more seriously than they do today? I think older people were confounded by some of this stuff. Same for the music in the 60s. Could that possibly happen today? My vote is NOPE! |

So I really liked the idea behind this thread, so I put a little time in sorting through my MP3 collection and came up with the following list. I know it’s missing many great bands and many great songs and given the length, I kept it down to two songs at the most for each artist or group. I hope this doesn’t kill the thread, but actually causes you to think of other songs you might have forgotten about. Also, I know many of these songs are already listed, but when you have a great group like Tiki Central, we are bound to think alike on many things…but I am sure there will be quite a few on here that you downright hate.
