Just as well you have to live in NZ or Australia or NZ to join trademe. The last thing we need is all the ebay high-rollers moving in! That said, this kind of stuff is actually probably cheaper to buy in the US these days. The local demand for Maori/Kiwiana stuff has reached critical mass....

Well, thank goodness, it looks like it has gone to a collector in Wellington. Here is hoping he is not an antiques dealer who will sell it to the highest bidder.

Went for $985 in the end.

Well, that surprised me... I expected it might hit $3-400, even with the reasonably amateurish level of carving...but almost $1000? Madness! There are a lot of people with too much money and no idea what things are worth on trademe these days. You could buy a piece twice as good for half as much from an auction house!

I guess it was the uniqueness of the thing Paipo. You dont see many pieces like that around. At least, I dont.

BTW, I love your work!
