tiki and hawaiian ashtrays

As our savage renewal project cleen and I decided to bring up the subject of tiki ashtrays for a few reasons. The first being that ashtrays have went the way of the dodo due to the anti smoking mentality of the country (don’t take this the wrong way I don’t like smoke filled places either and I occasionally smoke!). second we could not find a post dedicated to them. Thirdly we feel ashtrays are the weakest part of our own collection and most likely everyone else’s. That said we encourage everyone to add to this post so we and everyone else can see what’s out there.

Some of these are not tiki or even from restaurants but we enjoy them just the same and hope you do too. We included the matchbooks from the locales if we had them and ask that you do the same. Enjoy!

frankoma T8 not marked from a restaurant.

trader vic’s

mark thomas’s outrigger

kahiki does anyone know when this was used and who made it?

la concha motel, Vegas

terrace isle small print reads "tropical drinks in a tahitian atmosphere" no city listed on the ashtray. Does anyone have any info on this place?

hawaiian gardens san jose: I have seen a few mugs from this place too

kon tiki hotel phoenix

islander Stockton ca. match books from both major owners

lanai san mateo

bali hai shelter island. Three versions of the matchbook. The goof and cook island version are the same on the reverse.

large colorful ashtray. There is a set of this stuff that includes shakers, coffee type mug, tumbler and plate.

old souvenir ashtray that is a decal under glaze. Very lightweight and brittle.

another souvenir ashtray that you see a lot in thrift stores. Usually they have a name and hawaiian translation of the name. I thought it was cool that I could finally have one but didn’t have to look at a name like chuck (not that there is anything wrong with the name chuck) on it!

while this one has nothing to do with tiki or Hawaii I had to put the 25 cents down for it for obvious reasons!

I've got a bunch of ashtrays but most of them are packed away, including all of my Coco Joes. Here's what I could find:

From the Napili Kai Beach Club on Maui, probably made by Treasure Craft:

I think this is an ashtray. Really, I don't know what the heck it is.

Everything else I have is boxed up.

isn't this one usually marked from tiki gardens? or is it one that is similar to it?

I have some boxed up and packed away myself. I collect them mostly for their historical aspect (like my postcards and matchbooks). Here are a few that I lost on eBay to other bidders, but kept the auction photos:

Nice! I'd prefer to have the Hawaii version myself, since I can find no evidence of ancient Polynesians ever making it as far as Florida. :)

Sabu, that Kona Kai ashtray is a sweet one. Too bad you didn't nab it.

This is a Coco Joes canoe-shaped ashtray with tikis at both ends. I've been told that it was originally sold with jars of jelly inside.

.................

Anyone who collects tiki ashtrays should bid on these Trader Vics ashtrays that Tikifish is sellin on e-bay to benefit Purple Jade.

i almost forgot this one cause its outside for when we go out to smoke cigars. this thing is huge at a little over 10" across. it also has a pearl coat on the white to look like real mother of pearl!

Great Collections! Seeing as my wife is the smoker in the house, she prefers the Hotel Room pilfered ashtrays as they are easier to clean. But I do have this Coco Joes out in the Lounge. The finish is a bit beat up, and I'm tempted to mask off the jewel and give it a few coats of flat black BBQ paint. But as far as my favorite ashtray, it has to be this baby gator number. Once again, a gift to my dad from his favorite aunt. Unfortunatly it was kept on an open porch for a few years, and shows some wear & tear. Again, not Tiki in the classical sense, but certainly fits in.

There are just so many great pieces out there! Thanks for sharing some of your collections. Here is a few pieces from my collection:

This ashtray is from "Don The Beachcomber" at the Hotel Sahara, Las Vegas.

These two are from the "Bali Hai" that is still located on Shelter Island in San Diego, CA.

This seldom scene guy is from the old "Al Williams Papagayo Room" that was located at the Tonga Room in San Francisco during the 1940's.

The one on the left is a cool one from "The Tropics Motor Hotel, Seattle, Washington". The one on the right is from "John Ascuaga's Nugget Hotel/Casino" where Trader Dicks is in Reno, Nevada.

An awesome Tiki face one that looks very much like a Westwood style Tiki but only has a small blue and white "Made In Japan" sticker on the reverse.

The one on the left is a good old "Kon Tiki Ports" ashtray in the shape of a pineapple. It was designed by Steve Crane Associates and has a black and gold foil label on the reverse that says Japan and has what looks to be a H and F in a circle. The one on the right is an older frosted glass one that features a picture of the Kon Tiki expedition. It has no markings but I am guessing it probably came out of the museum in Norway.

Here are the five Trader Vic's all together. What I always hate is that when you think you have them all, you see another one somewhere! These ashtrays feature the same characters that are on the vintage Trader Vic menus. Not marked on the bottom but a couple of these do have the small oval blue and white Made in Japan labels.

Not really a ashtray but a pretty cool way to display your matchbooks! An unmarked ceramic shell dish with a nice paint job.

This one is made of metal and features a Maori carving from New Zealand.

Thanks for looking!!!

Man oh man, there's some nice stuff there. Now that is a collection! The glass logo ones don't do much for me, but some of those pottery pieces.... :o
I guess I actually have quite a few ashtrays, but I'll just post my favourite one:

That IS one great ashtray, Paipo. And Bongo: You win! :) God, there are so many cool ones, the modernist ones, the A-frames, and so many unsolved riddles..
Let's do a book "The Art of Smoking"! :) Tiki AND modernist ashtrays, matchbooks and lighters! Whos's gonna do it!?

Here is one Inky dug up for me!
I posted this info in locating tiki:
"I found an ashtray from this place. Did a google search and found out it still exists, but it is now Catholic run transitional housing for homeless folk!
ALOHA INN SEATTLE http://www.alohainn.org/ . Looks awesome! http://www.lihi.org/images/props/aloha_inn.jpg :)
The weird thing is the phone number on the ashtray is 285-6070 and the phone number on the website is 283-6070. Is the ashtray a typo and they kept the original phone number??"
