Tiki Central and the Room 135 singers present: Songs of ancestor worship to singalong to

Pages: 1 27 replies

I am working on burning a CD for y'all who are interested in actually LEARNING THE WORDS to some of the evergreens we chimed in on in room 135. I hope I will have copies ready for the Magic Tiki Bus on Friday, if not at least a demo.
The playlist includes all those Hapa Haole songs that I was too snobbish to listen to before because they were not EXOTICA!, but to whose enjoyment I have been converted to since room 135:
Alfred Apaka: Princess Poo-Pooly
Poncie Ponce: Keep your eyes on your hands- My Little Grass Shack- Little Brown Gal
Annette: Hukilau- Luau Cha Cha Cha (unknown, but a must!)
...and my personal champion, (a cross between Martin Denny, Johnny Cash and Criswell),
Paul Page: Bali Hai- When Sam Goes Back to Samoa (Oh-yesss!)

...and other unknown ones, like:
Let's have a Luau, by The Island-aires
Hawaiian Vamp, by Pua Almeida and the Sunset Serenaders

...and of course the
Hawaiian Eye theme song
The Disney Tiki Room Song- The Hawaiian War Chant

I am looking for clearly spoken lyrics, and tempo, to strum the ukes to. Some classics like "Beyond The Reef" are to languid.
Still have to dig up:
Tiny Bubbles (I do not own any Don Ho)
Pagan Love Song
Jungle Drums (with lyrics)

I can't burn myself, and my pal Pete has a very simple machine (no mixing possible), so I hope it will come out OK

F

How about "Sweet Leilani","Lovely Hula Hands","One Paddle, Two Paddle","Pearly Shells", and "Blue Hawaii"? Those are fun.

Oh yeah and "Okole Maluna"!!! The Waikiki Beach Boys sing it on their album.

I've been playing with some sound clips and various exotica tunes.... I should have some pretty entertaining tunes to enjoy on the bus this Friday!

:tiki:

Eeeeexxcellent! :)

I was thinking along the same lines after the sing along. One piece of hardware backordered at the Mac superstore is all that prevents me from burning my Waikiki Records Company library to cd. I know they aren't exactly exotica, but I just get a kick out of a guy that sounds like Burl Ives singing tunes like 'Hawaiian Scotsman.' Other hits include such King Kukulele favorites as:

The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai
Keep Your Eyes on the Hands
Red Opu (What am I gonna do?)
Hawaiian Cowboy
Ana Pau

One more thing - if anybody has the words to the Hawaiian War Chant, can they e-me??

Mahalo!

What about the "If we knew you were comin we'de have baked a cake, baked a cake!!" or " Sven's in the bathroom and he's takin a poop, takin a poop!" Those have to be on it too!!! Call King Kuku!!!

I have lots of exotica albums, etc. you could use, including Annette and Don Ho.
You could swing by our shack and we can make a tape together?
BUT - does anyone have a copy of "Every Night is Date Night in Hawaii"?

T

And, of course, if you need back up on an ice-bucket, just let me know.

TB

OK, here's the final playlist, I went for clearly audible lyrics and simple instrumentation:

  1. Webley Edwards intro
  2. Poncie Ponce: "Princess Pupuli has plenty Papaya"
  3. Annette Funicello: "Hukilau"
  4. Alfred Apaka: "Lovely Hula Hands"
  5. Don Ho: "Tiny Bubbles"
  6. Poncie Ponce: "Keep your eyes on your hands"
  7. Disney Jungle cruise intro
  8. Tiki Tiki room song
  9. Hawaiian War Chant
  10. The Surfers: "Drums of Tahiti"
  11. Paul Page: "Bali Hai"
  12. Intro Martin Denny at Duke's
  13. Don Ho: "Hawaii 5-0" (Vocal version!) "Quiet Village" (Vocal version!) medley
  14. Hawaiian Eye theme song
  15. Annette: "Luau Cha Cha Cha"
  16. Pua Almeida: "Hawaiian Vamp"
  17. Poncie Ponce: "The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai"
  18. Paul Page: "When Sam goes back to Samoa"
  19. The Island-aires: "Let's have a Luau"
  20. Webley Edwards outro

The Don Ho vocal versions of Hawaii 5-0 and Quiet Village are WICKED!

Here is the challenge, friends. Try to find printed lyrics for all of these, the ones we don't find, someone copy them down, then I can make a little singalong song book. No member of Tiki Central should be untrained in the lyrics to BALI HAI!

I will make as many copies as I can til Friday and pass them out in the bus, but from then on I will ask five bucks per disc, people can mail me the note and I send'em the CD. I'll post my address when I am ready.

What a great sounding CD!
Would it be at all possible to mail a few out of the country? Would 10 clams be enough to mail a copy to Europe?

English version:

There's a sunny little funny little melody
That was started by a native down in Waikiki
He would gather a croud down beside the sea
And they'd play his gay Hawaiian chant

Soon the other little natives started singin' it
And the hula hula maidens started swingin' it
Like a tropical storm thats the way it hit
Funny little gay Hawaiian Chant

Ow way tah tua lan
Me big bad fightin' man

Tho it started on an island down Hawai way
It's as popular in Tennessee or Iowa
If you wander into any cabaret
You will hear this gay Hawaiian Chant

Ow way tah tua lan
Me big bad fightin' man

Here are the lyrics for Rogers and Hammerstein's Bali Hai from 'South Pacific' (1949):

Most people live on a lonely island,
Lost in the middle of a foggy sea.
Most people long for another island,
One where they know they would like to be.

Bali Ha'i
May call you,
Any night,
Any day.
In your heart
You'll hear it call you:
"Come away,
Come away."

Bali Ha'i
Will whisper
On the wind
Of the sea:
"Here am I,
Your special island!
Come to me,
Come to me."

Your own special hopes,
Your own special dreams,
Bloom on the hillside
And shine in the streams.

If you try,
You'll find me
Where the sky
Meets the sea;
"Here am I,
Your special island!
Come to me,
Come to me!"

Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i.

"Someday you'll see me,
Floating in the sunshine,
My head sticking out

From a low-flying cloud;
You'll hear me call you,
Singing through the sunshine,
Sweet and clear as can be,
Come to me,
Here am I,
Come to me!"

Bali Ha'i,
Will whisper
On the wind
Of the sea:
"Here am I,
Your special island!
Come to me,
Come to me."

"Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i."

:drink:

WOW! Thanks, TraderPup for typing all that out - you rule. We'll have to do a duet!

Gratzi!

If you need lyrics, we have a singalong lyrics page at our site - which has many of those lyrics and other silly/fun lyrics...

Aloha all,
I wish I had read this topic a few days ago. Even though this comes too late for the bus trip, I couldn't resist jotting down these lyrics for posterity:

Hawaiian EYE!
Hawaiian EYE!
The soft island breeze
Brings you strange melodies
And they tell of
Exotic mysteries
Under the tropical spell of
the Hawaiian EYE!
Hawaiian EYE!
Hawaiian EYE!!!

Where love and adventure await,
This is your fate
And you cannot stray from,
You can't run away from
The Hawaiian EYE!!!!

Aw, Cherry posted the site I was going to post!

I have made a 32 song CD of stuff compiled from the pile of scratchy old Exotica for Hukilau. I don't know how many I will be able to burn, if any. Time is short. I was hoping to sell a few to try to get a little more revenue. Our expenses keep rising and our income is near zero. But I will make a couple and we can at least trade Big Bro.

Here is my song list:
Great singin songs are "*"ed

  1. Sam Makia - Hukilau Song*
  2. Alfred Apaka - Aloha Week Hula*
  3. Kodak Hula Show - Hoonanea
  4. Leo Addeo - Isle of Paradise
  5. Polynesia! - Minoi Minoi
  6. Sam Makia - Hawaiian Hospitality*
  7. Waikiki Boys - Luau Song***
  8. Werner Muller - Aloha Oe
  9. Jerry Byrd - Tangi Tahiti
  10. Les Brown - Bali Hai
  11. Ports of Paradise - My Little Grass Shack*
  12. Alfred Apaka - Lovely Hula Hands*
  13. Johnny Aluani - Aloha
  14. Billy Mure - Hawaiian Paradise
  15. Polynesia! - Tanga Tika
  16. Kodak Hula Show - Ula Noweo
  17. Norman Luboff - Papio
  18. Polynesia! - Papio
  19. Billy Mure - On The Beach at Waikiki
  20. Alfred Apaka - Narcissus Queen
  21. Fire Goddess - Canoe Song
  22. Norman Luboff - Tamure
  23. Marty Robbins - Sweet Leilani*
  24. Sam Makia - Hawaiian Hospitality
  25. Polynesia! - Vana Vana
  26. Waikiki Boys - I'll See You in Hawaii*
  27. Billy Mure - Kalua
  28. Elvis - Beyond the Reef*
  29. Alfred Apaka - Queen's Hula
  30. Henri Rene - Mangos
  31. Kodak Hula Show - Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai*
  32. Alfred Apaka - Hukilau Song*

Damn! I just noticed I have Hawaiian Hospitality on there twice. I need to check that.

Lyrics now firmly stuck in head:
"oh we throw our nets, out into the sea
and all the ama-ama come swimin' to me"

"We'll have some fish and poi,
and a piggy that's cooked all night,
pineapples, pineapples
and we'll hula while the moon is bright."

Yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me.

We pillage, we plunder,
we rifle and loot
Drink up me 'earties yo ho!
We kidnap and pillage
and don't give a hoot
Drink up me 'earties yo ho!

Yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me.

We extort, we pilfer, we filch and sack
Drink up me 'earties yo ho!
Maraud and embezzle and even hijack
Drink up me 'earties yo ho!

Yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me.

We kindle and char
and inflame and ignite
Drink up me 'earties yo ho!
We burn up the city,
we're really a fright
Drink up me 'earties yo ho!

Yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me.
We're rascals and scoundrels
and villains and knaves
Drink up me 'earties yo ho!
We're devils and black
sheep and really bad eggs
Drink up me 'earties yo ho!

Yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me.

I second that!

Yo Floratina,
I'm working on this dudes house in Huntington Harbor who has 4 of the old pirates (from the ride) and canons on his dock, on his porch and on the top of his house! first time I was there, they freaked me out!! He is now putting a thatched hut on the dock with a spa in it, next to the yaught!! Must be nice!! I can't get that song out of my head!

p.s.
Any Centralites who want to send CD's my way I'll play em' in the store. Also, send your mailing address, etc. so I can reffer customers as of where to purchase them. We don't stock other stuff but we LOVE to do referrals (i know, ben use spell check!!)(by now, i think everyone know's i can't spell. oh well!!).I also can't type! Hunt & peck. Address is below.

How on earth did this guy get the actual pirates? I hope they are protected from the elements - they are not so tough! O whassa matter little tough little pirate, melting in the sun! You gonna come after me and kick my ass now? Ha ha, just as I thought.

I think they are made of some sort of something hard. Next time I'm there, I'll ask. I just wiz by them cause the freak me out!!! And, then you hear boats going bye with people saying, look at the pirates! All day long. F'in pirates!! Anyone have that CD with all the Disney songs on it? We had a pirate costume party moons ago and played Yo Ho(and Friggin in the Riggin, sex pistols) for like 8 hrs. all night. I wander if that's why the freak me out!!!? Friggin in the riggin, friggin in the riggin, friggen in the riggen and blah blah blah blah blah! Time for bed Ben!

Yes, I believe the lyrics go something like, "Friggin in the riggin, there was f*ck all else to do".

"He stuffed his arse with broken glarse and circumcised the skipper" et al.

A classic, but I don't think the Pistols wrote it. Anybody have an earlier recording?

Anyone heavily into pirates should visit Bristol, UK. There are pubs there which were used by smugglers & pirates, but EVEN BETTER, there are people who actually TALK like pirates!

Since we're talking about fun tunes a la the Caliente singalong, I put up a couple mp3s in a web folder if anyone's interested...

http://www.goofspot.com/music/

Someone asked about Annette's Date Night In Hawaii - dunno if that was a request, but I put it up. Also Jeri Southern's great version of An Occasional Man. And two Japanese hawaiiana numbers from Midori Tashiro, including a version of Pineapple Princess.

Dunno for sure if this'll work for anyone, and they're big big files (like 3-5 Mb each) so be forewarned, and probably don't bother if you don't have a fast connection.

I am still looking for the record or cd of HawaiiAnnette, but gee it was swell hearing her sing Every Night is Date Night. Thanks!!!

The Captain's daughter Charlotte,
she was born and bred a harlot.
Her thighs at night were lily-white,
by morning they were scarlet!

Disney is not above auctioning off old stuff like this (or employees taking them if they're not "important"). 2 years ago Disney sold off the "Disneyland" sign that sat outside the park. they took it down during the remodeling and sold it on ebay. it went for 35,000.

~Hanford

He owns one of the biggest Electrical outifts in the U.S.. I believe that's how he gpt the Pirates. Anyone ever been to Barbados? Sam Loards Castle? He was a hard core pirate. Lot's o stories there. They mix a drink called a Buccaneer(sp) that makes you climb giant palm trees and get stuck!!! Been there, done that! They have a boat that's called the Jolly Roger (booze cruz to the max!). They fill you up with flying fish sandwiches make you dink gallons of Rum Punch and then make you walk the plank!! Barbados is cool.
