Occasionally I have to Youtube some of the bands I listened to in the 80's and well, today it was ABC.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X69xQl-xF1k

and lo an behold... I think the bar scene might have been filmed in somewhat of a tiki bar. or they decorated it that way...
There is a mask with flashing eyes above the band, and also one close up of some kind mask at 1 minute 3 seconds. Kinda trader vics like, but then I thought african, but then theres all these starfish and stuff hanging from the ceiling, and at 1 minute 24 sec, the palm trees and tropical kinda mural?
and at 1 minute 40 sec, check out the tiki behind her head...
Anyone know where this was filmed?
I'm guessing England somewhere, since that is where the band is from.
and on a non tiki note, but a "Pea loves vintage western wear" note, I gotta say if you are into it, check out those awesome vintage western shirts with the bolo ties with guitars...

I loved the few songs ABC did in the 80'a. You know "Look of Love" and "Poison Arrow". I think they had another but I'm drawing a blank.

I'll have to check out the link ...

Happy New Year!

That video was shot at the London Mayfair Hotel Beachcomber. Compare the chairs:

Here is some info on it:

This has actually been noted already in this thread: http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=3501&forum=1

Another TC thread talking about ABC it A-OK by me! I friggin' love that band. My teenage heart ached for Martin Fry in a way that will never be fully explained to another.

S

Sorry GatorRob,
I did a TC search, and didnt see anything that looked
like it had to do with what I posted.

And Haole'akamai,
no need to explain, I'm right there with ya!!!
Add to that list
Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet and
Brian Ferry from Roxy Music.
wheeeeee
boys sure were cute in the 80's!!!!

TM

Well, I am a dude, so there...

BUT, I really enjoyed these type of bands during the 80's. I have researched it, and I guess the genre is now called "sophisto-pop"
That would include:
ABC
Spandau (After the diamond album-they were "New Romantic before that)
Simply Red
Kajagoogoo
King
Level 42
Japan
Wang Chung
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Sade
Wham UK
and so many others!

Another way to look at it was that most of these bands were fans of American soul, and English "Northern soul".

Don't know what my comments have to do with Tiki, but there you have it!

S

oooh, I loved Japan.
and another favorite was
The Style Council
(preceded by the Jam of course! )

I gotta say, ABC puts on a great show these days. Inky thinks they could be a future Vegas permanent act-they are that entertaining!

The lead Singer Martin Fry looks just the same!
I saw them a few years back at the Hollywood Bowl and they rocked the house.

I'll see your ABC and raise you a Haircut 100.

If you look REAL close, you might even see a tiki. The possible end to tiki culture in the 80's could have been because of this:

I think they were having fun with it, as one should. I always liked that song (and Boy Meets Girl).

Saw them at the Orange Pavilion years ago. OMD opened for them.

A few weeks ago I was having trouble getting back to sleep so I turned on the teli. Came across a documentary titled "Made in Sheffield", birth of electronic pop. Featured bands that came from Sheffield England during the post punk era (1979-1982). ABC was one of those bands. Interview with Martin Fry,
other bands featured:
Artery
Cabaret Voltaire
Clock DVA
Def Leppard
The Extras
Heaven 17
Human League
Pulp
The Stuntkites

Hmm, Def Leppard seems out of place.
