A soldier was killed in a bar fight, that arose from his playing a Buffett song on the jukebox.
Rocky Mountain News - Soldier dies after bar fight over Jimmy Buffett song in Steamboat
(Excerpted:)
"A soldier from Fort Bragg died this morning in Denver from injuries suffered from a bar fight in Steamboat Springs on Friday night over a Jimmy Buffett song.

Richard Lopez, 37, of Fayetteville, N.C., was pronounced dead at... Denver Health Medical Center..."

"So far, no suspects have been arrested, although police have talked to two individuals involved in the fight..."

""The initial disagreement was about music being played on the jukebox," said [Police Capt. Joel] Rae, adding that it was a Jimmy Buffet song."

"Richard Lopez and two other individuals put on the song, but two other individuals did not agree with it."

"... the fight was taken outside the bar."

"By the time officers arrived on scene, the fight was over and Lopez was on the ground..."

"Two of Lopez's friends... were also injured in the fight."

"Rae said that all three were on leave from the military - Lopez and one of his friends were with the Army, while the other friend was in the Navy."

"A call to Fort Bragg indicated that Lopez was part of a special forces unit..."

"Rae said the case is still under investigation..."

"This is the first time that a physical fight has resulted in a loss of life from the use of hands and fists," he said...

That is truly sad.

SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LISTEN TO JIMMY BUFFET!

Another act of moronic violence, another person dead, hilarious!

This isn't the least bit funny.

It is a sad story. Lopez was on vacation with friends and family, including his 16 year old son, after being stationed in Afghanistan. Three years ago, he had been shot in the stomach and leg, I presume from combat during his Army service. To finally make it through that, make it back home, and then die on what started as a friendly night out is a real shame.

Other articles say that Lopez had selected Margaritaville on the jukebox, and two others in the bar started ridiculing the song. Those two later selected a Kayne West song, and Lopez and his friends returned with some ridicule against the Kayne song. The two groups became disorderly, and were asked to leave the premise by the bar owners ...... and the altercation resumed in the parking lot. The main trauma happened with a blow to the back of the head when Lopez hit the ground - it is uncertain whether he fell because of a blow or a slip on the ice. It is all under investigation.

It is foolish to blame either Jimmy Buffet or Kayne West for this incident - neither are known for violence in their songs. It is just as silly to blame Jimmy Buffet if one of his songs was playing on a car radio when a drunk driver crashes. If anything, blame the type of people who become loud and belligerent and initiate arguments in a bar ( I try to avoid these people anyway), get kicked out by bar management, and still feel the need to defend their honor and escalate things to fistfights.
