I Surrender! Where Is this Plate From?

I bought this a couple of months ago. It was too expensive, but I was bummed and needed to shop.

It was manufactured by Syracuse China.

I had the feeling that I'd seen it somewhere before, but my research skills have completely failed me on this one. Can anybody help me out, please?

My guess is that this was stock restaurant ware for a generic run of the mill Polynesian establishment, you see them for Chinese, Western BBQ, Sea food places, etc...
Had it been for a particular location they would have added a logo or something to ID the place, the design is so sophisticated and the amount of colors took some work, why would they leave a name off?
There must be a catalog out there someplace that would quickly answer this question!

Geee, that sure is nice, perfect Tiki Modern. I can see how one might think this is a logo of a place, it seems familiar....but even my photographic memory has no file on this exact combination of PNG designs. The fishnet floats certainly indicate it was made for a Tiki bar, or for the Poly pop restaurant trade in general. There was a burger joint called "The Rigger" in Waikiki that had a PNG mask similar to the one on right on their matchbook.

Always good to get proof there still is stuff out there that has never been seen before. Thanks for saving it.

Although this isn't of any help, I did see this exact kind of plate sell on Ebay about 1 1/2 years ago. I lost that auction, but if memory serves me correctly, the plate sold for around $26.00.

I am from Syracuse NY home of Syracuse China. I believe that at some point Syracuse China made china for home retail sale but that was before my time. They later specialised in restaurant and hotel china. For as long as I shopped there they were almost strictly restaurant and hotel. They used to have a really cool factory outlet store. They sold seconds. I have an awesome collection of plates. My wife doesn't like anything to match. It was perfect going to the factory store and getting seconds from all the restaurants and hotels. We have dinner parties and everyone gets a different plate from a different restaurant and it looks like we traveled the globe stealing place settings. I don't have any plates from Syracuse china like the one Kate has. That is a truly nice piece of china.

Here I am again, completely stumped by Syracuse China. This one looks really really familiar.

Anyone know of any restaurants that used this pattern?

Drawing a blank here, too, Kate. If this would be some place's logo Tiki, I would surely recognize it, but it does not ring a bell at all. It sure is a nice one, though!

I've got a little more information on this first plate. There was one on ebay recently which was apparently a sample. It had this tag on the back.

What I'm not clear on is if the pattern was called Hawaiian Village or if it was used at the Hawaiian Village. If it's the latter, which I assume it is, then which Hawaiian Village?

Tiki Kate -I recently picked up that same first plate you posted off ebay.I believe it's
from the Hawaiian Village in Florida , but not 100% sure.I am still doing some research on it.
You have a good eye. referring to the first plate you posted .I think there is a postcard
from HV and you can see the plates on the dinner tables with this pattern on them, If I
am not mistaking.

Nice find on the plate 8FT. Sterling China is still in business and pumping out china for restaurants. They started in 1917 and have made tons of logo china for airlines, railroads and restaurants and diners. Not sure of when or who your plate was made for but I think there is a collectors guide out and available at most bookstores. Good find.

Stylistically, this looks like 80s or 90s fantasy art, with an Art Nouveaux influence, not really like anything mid-century.

Yeah, I have 2 of these plates. One had D-8 the other D-9
Does that mean anything to you?

I am fairly sure D-8 was from Oct-Dec 1963...D-9 is from Jan-March 1964...hope this helps....Nice items. OGR

Well I'll be darned! To my eye it still has this Victorian doll collectors look and color palette. :)

I've seen this pattern frequently and there are a few similar or copied designs by other manufacturers too. Some have hotel & restaurant markings on the center or bottom and the ones I've run into were dated from the 60's-70's.

I collect an older pattern that has a simpler design in the same vein by Syracuse called "The Viking" patented from 1902. It also had its duplicators dating at least into the 60's. The one pictured below from the 7 Seas restaurant is the Syracuse as is the green oval plate.

Actually if you read through, my post is in response to the plate 8FT posted several spots up. I was showing similar plates like that are in the e-bay links I posted which gives some varied locations where they were used. The other pattern I have is relevant to that design as an example of the varied usage of these basic patterns and the locations where mine were used were later upgraded with the more colorful pattern in some cases. I think the "tiki-ness" of all is a bit far off, though some may tie in to the nautical theme coinciding with tiki themes at times.

Kate, do you have a photo of the markings on the back of your plate? And on a side note I think a thread just for restaurant server ware and dinner ware china is a great idea. With the knowledge folks on TC have it would be great to see it all come out on one big thread.

Oh please. The title of the thread is "Where Is This Plate From?" It's not "Where Is Kate's Plate From?" If I had wanted to narrow the scope, I would have changed the title. No need to apologize.

I like Uncle Trav's idea of a restaurant ware thread though. There are a ton of really cool tiki and tiki-adjacent designs out there.
