Warm water, weather and a killer luau party. Via cell phone from my "tiki 3" says we shall all plan on next year!
Summer is too short!!

gnarly weekend! I was so glad to meet Crazy Al and Bamboo Ben finally. I was a little intimidated to meet Crazy Al because. . . well, his name for one, but he is one very cool kat, and i was honored to be doing a carving demonstration right in front of him. I will post the pictures very soon!

I get to the event stage with Holden and Ben... see this guy... Holy Time Machine BatMan!! Who sent over the a dude from the Endless Summer Movie????
I new this knew kid was my kind of guy.
Great to meet you Tony. You’ve got the spirit. Hope to see you on Tues. A 50 minute tiki wont be all that much to admire but should provide an interesting interview show. I too will have to recover from this gig. I have about 20% less movement in my left shoulder thanks to carving all last spring and summer. Stretching Stretching Stretching do it- know it -live it.

Thanks to Latitude 33 for all the hospitality and the Great Weekend! Catalina Rules!

Once again, thanks Latitude 33! Crazy Al, I guess its obvious what my favorite movie is. For the past 3 years while at Cal Poly SLO, my wAhine and I didn't have cable, so i had endless summer on tape playing consistentlly. tHe first half of big wednesday is also a favorite of mine... which was given to me today for my b-day from my chikki-"d". I've always wanted to pull that move where 3 peeps are on a wave on different boards, then they all jump on one board. wow, i'm rambling. You are one cool guy C' Al. i'm sorry i missed the carving demonstration but i had to teach a last minute surf lesson... i was all set to drive to HB and surf lessons called. Hope to see you guys soon...

Better late then never - this post is way late! What an awesome gig it was! There are a lot of great venues/spots to pull of a most excellent Tiki Fest again at Avalon! Thanks to Kwhoona, Lokelani & Jerry!

Any date made for this years event yet??

Hope so! Twas an absolute BLAST last year! I'm still Hungover!

Wasn't it in August last year? But now Oasis is in August, so I hope there won't be a double event weekend! Cuz this year I ain't missin a thing!

Any dates for this yet?

Planning my 2007 summer Tiki calendar.

I heard it's not going to happen again :(

M

I missed out on Tiki Fest in 2003 and it sounds like it was a good time and the setting couldnt be any better. I realize that back then it happened on what is now Tiki Oasis weekend, but why was it never put on again? Catalina alone is an escape, so being on an island plus tikis, cocktails, live entertainment and a warm summer weekend seems like the ideal combo. Any insight to why the first annual tiki fest never made it to round two would be appreciated.

um I think there was a #2.
I recall that the Dynotones, and other bands played.
who were the other bands.

Jeff(btd)

Jeff - we were at the Catalina Tiki Fest in 2006, and I didn't actually realize until now that there were other events in Catalina several years prior to that. Yes, The Dynotones played, as well as The Smokin' Menehunes, APE, and King Kuk and The Friki Tikis. There were other bands too, but I don't recall the names (I'm sure that info can be found by searching the forums under Catalina Tiki Fest, if anyone is curious). It was pretty much our first real "TC" event, and it was a total blast, but I've heard that there won't be another, sadly. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason is that it was a logistical nightmare for the bands and vendors? If it ever were to happen again, we'd be there in a heartbeat, and I can name many others that would too.

Didn't Holden put it on? Betcha he has the answers. :)

I think you're right, this probably nails it. An affordable car ferry to Catalina would solve this.

Here's the link to the One and Only "Catalina Tiki Fest". It was one of the Best Events that I have every been too. Everyone had a Blast being stranded on an island for the weekend :)

No cars allowed, at least in Avalon. Golf carts only. If only some TCer had a boat they were willing to ferry people over on...

From a vendor and musician point of view, there is a ton of stuff to haul out there. It's not going to matter who owns the boat, they'll still have to load their stuff into their car at home, drive to the dock, transfer the load to a boat, travel to Catalina, transfer the load from the boat to.. to what? A golf cart? And then get it to the event site only to unload again and set up. Yeah, I can see why it's not happening again.

At least at Two Harbors there were pickup trucks that would haul your stuff from the dock to the nearby campgrounds.

There are plenty of minivan taxis but still it would definitely be a logistical nightmare for a band. Nevertheless, I would go in a hot minute and rent a condo for the weekend. I loooove Catalina.
