WHAT: Sonic Swell presents: Sunday August 1, 2010, $10, 2PM doors open, Music at 3 Surf Music, the instrumental soundtrack for generations of wave riders comes to the exotic island of Alameda on August 1, 2010. A music indigenous to California with a beat like the relentless tides of the Pacific, Surf has made fans and influenced musicians worldwide. Since the early 60s when songs like "Pipeline" and "Wipeout" topped the charts, the reverberated instrumental sound's popularity has waxed and waned, but continues with a hardcore following that won't let it die. Quentin Tarantino's 1994 cult classic "Pulp Fiction" brought surf music back into the spotlight and relaunched the career of Dick Dale, and his anthem, "Miserlou", spawned the "Third wave" revival, inspiring a whole new generation of double pickin' gremmies. Forbidden Island owner Michael Thanos and music booker Will "the Thrill" Viharo have made this island destination, already popular for its world class mixology, a Mecca for touring surf bands and their fans. This timeless brand of pulsating "marine-music" suits the rich tropical/nautical decor of the lounge, and though the sound is much more aggressive than the typical tiki bar exotica you might expect, it makes for a lively, retro-rockin' atmosphere, especially when combined with the exotic elixirs Forbidden Island is famous for. The plan now is to make this initial four-band exposition the first of many future annual, weekend-long events featuring bands from around the world. Headlining the Surfing Music Festival is Alameda's own Meshugga Beach Party, who can proudly call themselves "The World's Greatest Jewish Surf Band." Dressed as Rabbis they perform traditional Jewish music in a heavy reverb surf style, perfect for dancing the hora in your baggies. All this, and for extra saucy, sizzling sex appeal - live Go-Go dancers! BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! THE PIZZA HACKER PEARL'S KITCHEN THE LUMPIA CART SOUL COCINA Mad4Madelines ADOBO HOBO MaliNumNumTreats PLUS! Luscious Salads, Fresh Oysters, and much WHEN: Doors open 2PM, Saturday, August 1; music 3PM-6PM (food all day, or while it lasts!) HOW MUCH: $10 WHERE: FORBIDDEN ISLAND TIKI LOUNGE, 1304 Lincoln Ave., Alameda Don’t miss this unique multi-sensory overload! It's a bitchin' belchin' blowout! I don't really like to party on Sundays because like most Mondays are a work day for me and when I go to the Island I tend to tie more than one on... But after reading more about this and doing my research I'm going to dive in and let my work on Monday be damned! Now never having gone to the Antiques by the Bay I would like to know where that is too so I can get some tiki swag before the shows. Anybody want to share with me where the Antiques by the Bay is? I know that Alameda is a small island but I don't want to have to drive all over it in order to find it. |

Antiques by the bay: If you're driving through the tunnel, make a right on Atlantic Avenue and a right on Main street and follow the signs. Pretty easy to find. |

At last Sunday's premiere "Surfin' Smorgasbord," Forbidden Island was hit with a tremendous tidal wave emerging from a sensational sea of aloha attire, go-go gals, rhythmic reverb, fabulous food and killer cocktails! Special thanks to The Deadbeats, Frankie and the Poolboys, the Wadadli Riders, Meshugga Beach Part, the food cart vendors and especially YOU for making this musical monsoon our best attended special event yet! Another shout-out to Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle, whose interview with Will the Thrill on the front page of Saturday's Datebook really helped get the word out! Here's some pics. The complete album is available for viewing on our facebook fan page:
