"BIZARRE" magazine's Tiki Issue - Aug 2010

Pages: 1 22 replies

Picked up the latest issue of the UK magazine, "Bizarre". 23-page "Tiki" issue including an article by Sven Kirsten and interview with Shag. Buy the magazine, skip the pictures of matadors being gored through the chin and other grotesqueries typical of this magazine, and you will get to view the following:

 Photo spread of pinup model Sabina filmed at Frankie's in Las Vegas

 Best ad for Crazy Al's tiki carving I've ever seen

Aaaaw Tim, why d'ya have to post that! :) That is one of my more embarrassing endeavors of recent, a result of my New Year's resolution to counter the "Wrong" of how Tiki is often presented by the media. So I decided to (instead of complaining about bad reporting and un-imaginative Tiki mugs being cranked out) jump in the fray and actively contribute when presented with the opportunity. Well I feel I did OK in the mug genre....

But even though I knew Bizarre is trashy, I did not know HOW trashy, with all the gore and fetish and 10 year old tatooed kids and...sigh. Not exactly what I call eye candy, more like eye poop. I was made to re-write my article so many times, for those little handy boxes (long sections of text would obviously confuse the readers) that less than half of what I wrote ended up in the piece. The media won. Don't read it, it ain't worth it. The Shag article is OK though.

I agree - Totally trashy, cheesy magazine. But then I was reading the little tiki blurbs on each page and was surprised at how accurate they were, so I realized you must have been involved.

Thanks for fighting the good fight and I'll just look at the photos of Sabina.

I say- It's all good bro!

I got it. I had to. I think I'm a little too old to be impressed with gore pictures and blood anymore, but the day tiki is actually admitted to exist in media is a fine one, and I needed to put it on the shelf with my tiki/polynesian/etc. books.

Oh no, don't put it next to MY books. :)
Tiki has been admitted to the media in regular intervals for many years now. It's just the way it was being done that I was trying to improve on. Alas...

I was surprised to see Tattoos listed as a component of Tiki culture.

Do I have to get a tattoo now ?? :D

Also that model should have been a brunette.

Shot at Frankie's Tiki Lounge from the looks of it....

It doesn't seem to be the content that's bad, but rather the vehicle. Like a serious tiki artical in the National Enquirer.

When did Shag move to L.A.?

P

Hey Sven, I'll keep the magazine on one side of the shelf and your book on the other, so they don't have to pretend to know each other.

Awesome!

I think he just has a working studio there Ben.

I know that British English and American English are different but does that recipe for the Hawaiian Eye actually call for Fugar Syrup?

I actually Googled it, thinking "That's an ingredient I've never heard of."

I'm going to have to score a copy of that mag just for grins.

I guess "Old School" Tiki is gonna remain just plain old.

I myself am going back to the 1800's and stayin' there for awhile.

This is actually Bizarre magazines second tiki edition they did a great Exotica themed magazine back in 2002 (I think) before they became the tattoo-corpse-porn mag that they are today.

Yeah Its a shame,As it could have been a good mag but tries too hard to be outragous by gross pics and dumbed down articles,Typical british press!

How to get one.

Something weird about tacky mag satirizing demi-tacky pop cultural form....

i used to pick them up all the time from 97-2000.
they have always been a "tattoo-corpse-porn mag" [sic].
they have always been a ballsier version of maxim.

The Shag interview from that issue is now readable at...

yep, I remember that one. I think it was one that featured Tiki Farm as part of it and was one of my earliest interviews. Or hell... maybe I just donated a mug (again!). Dunno... forget but kinda remember it at the same time. Think I got a copy... well, maybe not.

I dig the "dark" photos of Shag though.

I like the initial Tiki description, and the hot pink shoes!
