Kaua'i rum story

New (Feb '10) Hawai'i Magazine has feature story on Koloa Rum, made on Kaua'i. It's not on the http://www.hawaiimagazine.com website yet, but a few highlights:

  • Owner has stored up 3 years-worth of Kaua'i-grown sugar, because the island's last sugar plantation closed in October of this year.

  • Using a 1947 Kentucky still once used to make Jack Daniels.

  • Production began in October 2009, with white, gold and dark bottlings. (Company website also lists a spiced rum, but that wasn't mentioned in the story.)

  • Only available at the moment on Kaua'i at the company's tasting room. Several Kaua'i bars have it, including the Beach House Restaurant, Duke's Canoe Club, and at the Marriott and Hilton.

Once again, information a few days too late for me. As mentioned in the okolehao thread, my brother was just on a Hawaiian cruise and could've picked me some up had I known. D'oh!

Currently, there are 3 types: white, amber & dark.
Spiced rum will be available in a year or so.

There is a great tasting room at Gaylord's. If there are two people, you should be able to sample all 3.

Gaylords, also is a nice historical place, for a train ride, al fresco lunch and art galleries.

Does anyone know if these are available online yet?

Thank you for your interest in Koloa Rum! It's currently available at http://www.hitimewine.net and statewide in Hawaii. Aloha...

Hello, I'm very interested in your product. Do you have any time frame on when you might send HiTime or anyone else on the mainland a shipment? HiTime has none in stock.

Thanks!
Chris

Hi Chris, I just called Hi Time and they have all of the rum in stock for mail orders and it's also on the shelf. Good luck!

Thank you, they show your product as "Special Order".

Best wishes,
Chris

It's no longer a special order and they need to take that off, I guess they keep forgetting to. They should always have it in stock now. Let me know how your quest turns out! Aloha.

What's the verdict on the taste? Hi Time's shipping cost is quite scary.

Good Morning Shaun of the Tiki!
I don't know if you have seen that all of our rums are award winning rums. Our dark rum won a gold medal at the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival back in May. If you are going to try one, I would try that one. Considering Koloa Rum is not widely available on the mainland at this time, the cost of shipping from Hi Time is well worth it, since it will be a rare find for you and/or if you decide to share it with your friends! Aloha...
