4th annual Surf Guitar 101 Convention, Sat. Aug 13th 2011, 9am to 8pm

Pages: 1 2 80 replies

For the first time in 4 years, I am super stoked to announce that:

The Surf Guitar 101 convention will be 1 week before Tiki Oasis.
So if you can get off a whole week.
Come out the weekend before Tiki Oasis, for the Surf Music Convention,
Then check out all the tiki bars in So. Cal. during the week between.
Hit the beach or the amusement parks during the day
Then GO to Tiki Oasis the following weekend.

More fun and entertainment than you can shake a stick at.

It’s hard to believe, but the fourth SurfGuitar101.com convention is now upon us! Mark your calendars now, Saturday, August 13th 2011 is a date you will not want to miss! Join us for a celebration of live surf music in the heart of Southern California!
We are absolutely pleased to announce the headlining act will be none other than Satan’s Pilgrims! We are also excited to continue the tradition started last year by hosting bands from outside the United States. This year, visiting from foreign shores we will have The Razorblades (Germany), The Bradipos IV (Italy), and The Blue Demons (Canada)!

As before, we will host a special “Legends of Surf” jam, where members of original 1960’s surf bands will play the classics in the genre. You won’t want to miss this! Past years have featured members of The Belairs, Eddie & The Showmen, The Chantays, The Lively Ones, and The Crossfires. This year we are going to feature the music of The Belairs, Davie “King Fuzz” Allan, and a tribute to Eddie Bertrand!

Do you play an instrument? Why not sign up for the SG101 member jam? Site members get up and play surf classics old and new, sometimes standing side by side with musician’s from the original bands!

We’ll also have a large vendor space featuring CD’s, vinyl, t-shirts, DVD’s and more!

All of this is happening Saturday, August 13th, 2011 at The Starting Gate, 5052 Katella Avenue, in Los Alamitos, California, 9am to 8pm.

Here is the complete band lineup for the convention:

Satan’s Pilgrims - http://satanspilgrims.com/
http://www.myspace.com/satanspilgrims
One of the most popular and influential modern surf bands, these caped musicians hail from the Pacific Northwest, home of the Ventures, The Sonics, and The Wailers.

The Razorblades - http://www.myspace.com/therazorbladesgermany
All the way from Germany, you’ll dig their fast and loud take on surf music.

The Bradipos IV - http://www.myspace.com/bradipos4
From Italy, you’ll love their traditional surf and spaghetti western sounds.

The Cocktail Preachers - http://www.myspace.com/cocktailpreachers
This Chicago band indeed preaches to the faithful the sounds of surf, exotica, and Mai-Tais.

Daikaiju - http://www.myspace.com/daikaiju
This Kabuki masked band hails from Alabama, and plays a high explosive, rocket-fueled progressive form of surf music. One of the most talked about live acts on the scene.

Meshugga Beach Party - http://www.meshuggabeachparty.com/meshugga/index.htm
Who knew? Traditional surf music combined with Jewish folk songs! You have to see to believe these chosen surfers from Northern California.

The Deadbeats - http://www.myspace.com/deadbeats63
One of the hottest and youngest surf bands today, these kids like to play old school surf music loud and fast!

The Blue Demons - http://www.myspace.com/thebluedemons
From Toronto, these wrestling super heroes will take you to the mat with their pile-driving take on surf and garage music.

The Tequila Worms - http://www.myspace.com/thetequilaworms
Another young band, these guys hail from Anaheim, California, and sound like The Ventures after getting in a car crash with Link Wray!

San,

As of now, there hasn't been a big demand
For presale tix. Just show up early and pay at the door.
Charge is 25 dollars.
The doors open at 8 am. They have some great breakfast specials there.
Vending starts around 9 am, show at 10 am

True there, thanks for posting that.
There will be a bunch of vendors,
Maybe even a tad of tiki stuff.
Some selling very hard to find books, and music.
So this is a good time to shop for yourself, or for the holidays too.

Why attend the SG101 convention ??

I can think of 4 good reasons. Let's start off with reason number 4 and work our way up.

Reason #4: You hate Surf music and/or feel it has no place in Tiki culture...

BUT... you want to express your appreciation for BigTikiDude's good friendship and general Tiki ambassadorship.

You can show your support by attending HIS event.

It's definitely a labor of love. :)

Wow!!
thanks John O,
I can think of a lot of people that fall into this category.

Jeff(btd)

I am saving my pennies, because I bought a butt-load of Music at the last SG101 event. I am so looking forward to being turned on to some "Surf" that is new to me. If any of you haven't seen Daikaju yet....well you are in for a treat. They bring it and they don't let up!!!

Amen to that Spermy,
I was talking to Joshboy on Sunday night,
he said last year he spent around 300 bucks on about a foot of cds.

Well BigTikiDude has made it easy for you. He's assembled some of the best bands from across the country (world?) for your listening pleasure.

It's one-stop shopping to get educated on the latest and greatest. :)

Reason #2: You're a hardcore Surf music fan, check the SG101 website everyday, own hundreds of albums and CDs, and John Blair's book is your bible, but you NEVER EVER go to live shows.

So... In BigTikiDude's own words (try to imagine your own father lecturing you :D):

"If you don't support your scene, you won't have a scene left to support".

(Actually I should be posting that reason on the SG101 website.)

Preach On!!!!
Brother John.

Here's a recent on-line intervew with BigTikiDude...

http://www.nesmasurf.org/featured_band.htm

Read it and you can understand how his mind works.

Also notice how they refer to him as...

"THE" Big Tiki Dude.

Ha, ha

John O,

Be careful how much praise you give me.
It could come back to haunt you.
Or people might think we have something
Going on.
:o

But, thanks man,
Your one of the few cool believers.

Trivia question for tix to the show tonight,
gotta get to work,
but keep yer eyes peeled after 8 pm pac. time.

Jeff(btd)

triva question is up here:
http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=40807&forum=1&start=last&

John O,
you will probably get this,
so if you don't want to play, that's yer call,
but you are eligible if you want to play.

Jeff(btd)

bump, for a reminder about the trivia question in general discussion

I guess there was a need to move the trivia question to the Tiki Music
Area.

Here is where it got moved to:
http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=40807&forum=11&46

and it kind of fizzled out.

Jeff(btd)

Heard 1 of the bands playing on KFJC in Nor. Cal. tonight.
The Bradipos IV were on Fire.

Hope to see some more TC people this year.
