I was close...

But no cigar. :(

John O was close,
he called me with some of his answers.
but he also doesn't want to play again,
since he won last year.

Anybody?

I wish Atomic Tiki Punk was still on TC,
he'd give a good go of it.

Are they Canadian?

Not that I know of,
pretty sure they were american,
I will google that question,
I admit, I don't know a whole bunch about the punk band,
except for their few surf songs.

No Grog, not Canada,
USA band

Are deceased former New York Dolls guitarist considered punk?

Maybe,
but wrong band.

and why are you so obsessed with Death?
:o

Jeff(btd)

So I was thinking "Jody Fosters Army", but I can't connect the songs?

well the Dolls are proto Punk

Does it have to do with the Surf Punks? I don't wanna win because I want to pay and support your event!!

Now I'm thinking of the Dead Kennedy's? Pollo Del Mar does one of their songs "Moon over Marin" I know there is vocals to it. But, Pollo Del Mar does an instrumental version of it.

My first guess would be the Devo surf band the Wipeouters...

Of course NOFX, The Clash and The Cramps are all close seconds....

PTD

Chuck,
you're on the right track

now just figure out the 2 songs,
and how the 1 is connected to tiki?
and how the other is connected to a tiki event theme this year?

for 1 other person, figure out what other instro song they did,
that most people think of as surf, but then why isn't it really a surf song?

come on people, this isn't rocket science.

JFA also did(does?) Baja,Walk Don't Run, Lowrider,....did they do La Bamba?
I think they did Pipeline straight up on that CD with the pictures of Upland Pipeline on it.

Both of you guys are so very close,

I need the 2 correct song titles.
"the Day walt disney died" isn't one of them.

How 1 is related to tiki,
how 2nd is related to tiki event this year.

and for bonus for 1 ticket, the 3rd instro song.
how the 3rd song is only instro, and not really a surf song.

please think slowly and follow thru on each one.

They did a song called Beach Blanket Bongout, and NOBODY is more tiki than Bong!

that is true,
but that is a vocal,
were going all instros here.

Jeff(btd)

How 1 is related to tiki,-Beach Blanket Bongout (Reference to Beach Blanket Bingo-New Les Baxter release)

how 2nd is related to tiki event this year-Baja (Oasis Theme is South of the Border) Baja is south of the border.

and for bonus for 1 ticket, the 3rd instro song.
how the 3rd song is only instro, and not really a surf song.

Tentpeg!

1, wrong song,

  1. correct song, and connection. (good job)

  2. what is Tentpeg? a song title?
    don't know of it,
the song I am looking for is a cover of a Classic instro song, that they do.
and why is it not really a surf song?
you had it earlier in the thread.

You're right. Rocket science is easy when compared to trying to decipher the anal-retentive Surf music geek logic of BigTikiDude's brain.

Ha, ha. :D

Am I being a stickler, or is this not more of a "Tiki Music" related topic?

Ha, ha. :D

BAHAW! Or is that Baja?

"The Great Equaliser" ?

"Charlie Brown" theme which JFA did a cover of & its Tiki right?

How 1 is related to tiki,-Axed at Howards-"Hack, Hack, Hack"(weak reference to carving)?

How 2nd is related to tiki event this year-Baja (Oasis Theme is South of the Border) Baja is south of the border.

and for bonus for 1 ticket, the 3rd instro song.

Walk, Don't Run, which is not a song but the first instrumental considered to be "surf".

Yes, Tent Peg is an instrumental by JFA.

PTD

well I have not listened to JFA for years, very surprised that I got the band right, but I can't
remember all the live recordings etc.

I sent ATP a message but I think he is working so I am at a loss for the songs
I did remember they covered a few surf instros.

Psycho Tiki D is rocking the answers I hope?

Gee thanks for moving this to tiki music.
If I didn't want that many people to see it
I would have put it here(aka no mans land)
In the first place.

I gotta get to work,
Will school you guys later.
Unless somebody finally gets it right.

Jeff btd

In mean time..
If you need a study guide, I found this official JFA site

Official JFA site

If that does not have any answers, try this one....

Other Official JFA site

first link is Japan Football Assoc. you goof!

I know this is off some rare compilation that I have never heard so make me a sandwich instead Jeff.
and not PB & J!

Can't wait to see what is more JFA tiki than Walt Disney! Edumacate me please!

This seems a little suspicious?

Obviously the TC Moderators think so...

Surf Music haters !!

I don't know what walt Disney song has to do with tiki,
But it's a vocal,
And I'm looking for instro songs only.

Now this is in tiki music area
I should just say it's dead,
Or give Gavin and PTD the prizes as they
Were pretty close.

John O said it best above,

bonus question for 1 tic for 1 person,
Name a instro song they did, that most people think is surf, but its not.
and Why is it Not?

JEFF!! is it I-10??? its a hardcore song...no reverb, no surf beat

or standing on the edge? because its a funk song

And Chuck Tatum. He called out JFA.

That was the breadcrumb for Gavin and PTD.

Actually that was one of my first guesses. I say it's "Surf". BTD says nyet.

John O,

you are right, after going back and re-reading the thread
I saw that Chuck said JFA.

as for Charlie Brown theme,
love the song, but its a Jazz tune,

So I will award 1 ticket to each person,
for getting in the area on some, and getting other answers.

Can all 3 of you attend the event?

And not that it really matters now, that the thread is way down here in Tiki Music,
Thanks to the Higher Powers that be, and Thread sticklers.

So.....

Band JFA, so Chuck got that one

1st song, Gavin mentioned it, but never followed thru on the connection.
Pipetruck, their take on Pipeline,
related to tiki by,
Pipeline is a surfing spot in Hawaii and tikis are in Hawaii (vague yes, but it works for me)
by the way, John O told me on the phone Tikis were not from Hawaii, but from the US mainland,
still trying to wrap my head around that one. WOW!!!

2nd Song that PTD got
Baja, a quintessential surf song,
but with a South of the Border theme That ties into Tiki Oasis.

3rd song, Bonus,
Walk Don't Run
This song was originally done by Jimmy Smith, and was a pretty strait,
if not Mellow Jazz song.
Chet Atkins later livened it up and re-did it,
Then in 60 or 61 (Pre surf)
the Ventures did a rock instro Version of it.
yes it did have a surf beat, but this was before surf was born,
and if you asked them if they were doing a surf version then, or now,
they would have said No,
They did re-record it in 64, with tons of reverb and Organ,
and a reworked structure to the song.
Some would say Surf, I would almost say Post surf,
and the Organ was way over the top and annoying
Would the Ventures call it surf? I dunno, ask them,
but I say its not.

Then they did a disco version of it in 79
and a Ska Version of it in 2000.

So there you have it,
the Big Dud of a trivia game,

Maybe I should have gone with John O suggestion about the surf songs
with tiki in the titles.
There is always next year.
Should I just start in Tiki Music,or Try it out in General Discussion?
The First years question is still there in General Discussion.
go figure.

Winners,
e-mail me at [email protected] about your winning.

thanks for playing.

[ Edited by: bigtikidude 2011-08-04 09:55 ]

PTD,
as for first surf songs,
there were 2 songs in 61 that came out a week apart,
that many point to as the first surf songs,

The Bel Airs, Mr. Moto,
and
Dick Dale, Let's Go Trippin'

The Funny thing is,
both bands said they were not trying to be "surf bands" when they started out.
They were just playing instro rock n roll.

But the Surfers that were going to their show.
Bel Airs in Redondo Beach
Dick Dale in Balboa Beach
said, when they heard their music, its what they hear in their heads when surfing.

Many surf band have played Walk Don't Run,
and other songs that the Ventures have done over the years.
But The Ventures were not a surf band,
but a Instro Rock band, that dabbled in surf in the 63 64 era,

Thanks, that was fun.
I skated one day with the guitar player from JFA, I think his name was Don. Big curly hair.
He came to my ditch (Back Door) and was pretty cool, and could skate, so we took him up into the Tustin Hills to a pool we had going for about six months in the back of an abandoned house.
I believe Brian recently did guest DJ spots for or with Whorehay/Radio Free Bakersfield...I think?
A local surf shop here in SD has one of those original huge ass cutaway JFA decks, with the paisley logo, on the wall for display.
Health Sucks.

Gavin,

you are correct, Brian has sat in on RFB recently,
and he will be at the SG101 conv. also.

shoot me a email if you want to collect on yer ticket to the show.

The Tikis "WE" care about are from the mainland. :)

Also "Pipetruck" --> "Pipeline" --> Hawaii --> real Tikis --> mid-century Tiki-style ?? That's at least 4 degrees of separation on that question !!

And about the Peanuts theme, here's surf culture author Dominic Priore's take (or is it Brian Chidester's?)...

"Perhaps the best recordings of surf music by any punk band were those done by JFA (Jodie Foster's Army), which recorded Vince Guaraldi's 'Schroder's Theme' as heard in the Peanuts television cartoon specials back in the '60s..."

"JFA took the Astronauts' approach to thick, steady rhythm guitar tones and threw on a 'Baja'-styled lead guitar part to Guaraldi's most famous melody. Without trying too hard to be 'Surf', these cats from Arizona captured the true spirit of surf music better than most of the people who fail the minute they put on a bad Hawaiian shirt."

Regardless of its origin, it's (IMHO) a "Surf song". :D
