Yes, you can find rod iron in the US (I know a blacksmith who still works it), but you're probably going to have to either have the raw material shipped in or make it yourself (see Lindsay Books). |

okay, so now i'm really confused. anyway, i cleaned some (w)ro(ugh)/d/t iron bar stools today & must say that very fine grade steel wool & some stuff called naval jelly (smelled more like navel jelly!) really did the trick! based on some advice from a friend, i cleaned the vinyl seats of the stools w/ pumace-based hand cleaner. this stuff worked like a charm, especially removing 50 years worth of nicotine stains from the seats! these stools look brand new! |

we know it's embarrasing to have a stain on your seat, not to mention rusty stools and navel jelly. |

We only have one way of dealing with this kind of thing in the shipyard - sandblast it, primer it and paint it. [ Edited by: Shipwreckjoey on 2003-11-21 19:56 ] [ Edited by: Shipwreckjoey on 2003-11-21 19:57 ] |

I agree. I've fixed more than I've broken...now cars are a different story. |

Female saliva works well on my rod iron. You can also try to borrow someone's Vermillion Pavillion and try dipping your rod iron in it. Sorry. Steel wool is the key, then you can even lightly oil it after to keep it fresh. Maybe a Dremmel with a wire brush would be fastest, never tried it, though. |
