Just spent a night there, they were re-shingling the roof and they said they'd be done by morning ...they weren't
Being that it was my first visit I was really dissapointed to see the restaraunt gone as well as the poolside bar , seems like these things would draw customers away from a buisness not generate new ones .
Still got alot of photos of the classic carvings on the property...I hope they see the potential in restoring the TIKI to this motel.

Bravo! Even though we don't know and have no control over what the NEXT re-incarnation of the Tropics restaurant and bar will be, the preservation of the A-frame was a an important action that deserves praise:

Palm Springs Modern Awards - Oct. 1, 2011

The Palm Springs Modern Committee held its seventh annual preservation awards luncheon at Hotel Zoso, on October 1, 2011. The awards luncheon recognizes members of our desert community who have contributed towards preservation of our mid century modern architectural heritage, in particular those who have preserved the original integrity of a building, those who have restored a building, new architecture inspired by the modern style, adaptive re-use of a building, and individuals who go above and beyond in their efforts to keep preservation at the forefront.

The award for commercial preservation was presented to Brian James, General Manager of the Caliente Tropics Hotel. Following the collapse of the enormous A framed porte cochere, the owners spared no expense in rebuilding it to the exact standards of the original design.
