Ok Folks, the last "Evening in Shangri-La" celebration for the year, is this coming Saturday December 18th! Come out and enjoy some FREE music, featuring the one and only Los Santos with Kaiser Ken Mottet, doing their Los Straitjackets Christmas Pagent Tribute. Between sets the Island Hula Girls will dance a special Christmas performance, plus of course, the monthly FREE raffle...

This month we have a Hawaiian themed Nutcracker couple, an Exotica 2007 framed poster, a Wraygun CD, a Purple Jade Tiki pendant, a vintage coconut purse, 1 dozen FOM swizles, lucky Hawaiian key chain, vintage green Moai mug, Coco Joe's Menehune couple, Purple Jade Mai Tai bucket glass, Pirates of the Carribean DVD, Music for Moai CD, vintage Trader Vic's coconut mug, vintage "Suck 'Em Up" Hawaiian beer stein/ashtray combo, a Kona Coffee gift pack, couple of Chef gift certificates, and possibly a couple of other last minute additions.

The fun starts at 7pm, the band will go on about 7:45/8:00pm, and the FREE raffle will take place between sets.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM SUZIE AND THE STAFF AT CHEF SHANGRI-LA!!!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

D&C

What a Ho Ho Holiday festive party, Kaiser Ken and Los Santos rocked the Chef...

...and Island Hula did a great Christmas show between band sets!

Thanx to everyone who came out and help make this the best crowd so far, since the entertainment was added!

On behalf of the entire staff at Chef Shangri-La,

Mele Kalikimaka!!!!!

Ok, it's a new year and time for the first "Evening in Shangri-La" of 2011 Saturday January 15th, starring the one and only Reluctant Aquanauts. This marks their first appearance at the Chef since Exotica 2007 and they are really looking forward to performing there once again.

We're switching it up a little bit this year...

...Time Change: instead of 8pm until 10:30pm the band will start later, between 9/9:30pm with the FREE raffle between sets and the event will run until midnight or so. The bands will now perform in the back of the main dining room where the long table used to be. This will actually make more room for the bands, plus they have a side door access right there to load in and out. Also has more seating, so more folks can see the entertainment, so it just made more sense. Plus now the kids won't be running through the band to get to the Koi pond and the bands don't have to worry about electrocution.

So come on out and shake it to the soothing sounds of the Reluctant Aquanauts!

See ya at the Chef.

We'll have the FREE raffle photo up in a couple of days, so check back.

NYE at the Chef was a blast!

No cover, pressed duck, multiple Dr. Fong's, and the Cocktail Preachers? Can't beat it!

Hands down champion when compared to $85 a head for well drinks, buffet and a pop cover band at Vic's. We were told they did everything from "torch classics to Lady Gaga" so we went to TV's the following week for $5 Mai Tais instead.

Keep up the good work, folks- we'll see you this month!

Here's this month's FREE raffle items...

...we have a 2003 framed Exotica poster, large wooden Tiki fork and spoon, a Purple Jade Tiki pendant, FOM Music for Moai CD, blue Tiki mug, a 2007 framed Exotica poster, a set of 2 Moai plastic tumblers, a Tiki picture frame, one dozen FOM swizzles, Tiki Bobblehead, set of Maibu Rum Moai & Coconut mugs, a set of Tiki citronella candles, vintage coconut mug, a couple of Chef gift certificates, and possibly a couple of last minute additions.

Alewife begins with spiritual access to the lunar pull of tides and sand, fueled by the swinging equatorial sounds of Santo & Johnny, sparked along the way by the midcentury soundtrack giants like Yma Sumac, Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota and Antonio Carlos Jobim, while slurping hungrily on a shot of loamy adrenaline from the surf guitar wizardry of Ventures after they'd dosed on Hawaii Five O, then seasoned with the seductive classic melodies and rhythms of Puerto Rico, Colombia and Cuba ... fill to the rim with ice, shake vigorously, and pour out a cool cocktail.

Sorry for the late notice, should have posted this last week...

This month we have The Exotics from Milwaukee making their debute appearance at the Chef on Saturday August 20th. Be sure to make reservations cuz these guys are goina fill the house!

In case you've never heard of these kats, here's a little info...

The Exotics formed in the Winter of 1994 and began their career playing to capacity crowds starting with their very first show. Maybe the surf explosion was fueled by the newly released movie Pulp Fiction, or maybe it was just time for something different in a music scene dominated by long haired hard rockers. The Exotics didn't care why, they were just enjoying the ride. After hitting every possible venue in the Milwaukee, they began playing farther and farther from their home base. They became a regular act at Lee's Liquor Lounge in Minneapolis and played many live music venues in Chicago at eight week intervals. The Exotics continued to play any city that would have them in a ten hour radius. Hundreds of gigs, one single and one LP later, the Exotics disbanded at the end of 1999. In 2005 the boys reformed the band and made featured appearances on the long running public radio program “A Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor and at the festival Chicago Exotica. In 2009 The Exotics unearthed the long lost recordings originally intended as the follow up to their now legendary “Go Go Guitars” LP. This album was shelved for more than ten years and subsequently forgotten during the band's all too long hiatus. That is until now! With their chemistry still intact and their sound stronger than ever, The Exotics are up and running again.

Don't forget there's new food specials and specials in the bar as well. Saturday night August 20th the drink special is a Dr Fong w/ collector mug for $15, that's right, for $15 you get the drink and you keep the mug! So come on out, have some pupus, a tropical libation or two, and enjoy the swingin' surf sounds of The Exotics.

We'll post FREE raffle photo later this week.

Mahalo,

This month we have Roger and the Wraybands bringing their smoldering surf sounds to the Chef on Saturday September 17th.

Since 1999, Roger & The Wraybands has been entertaining music fans in the Chicago area with their solid surf sounds. The four piece instrumental guitar band serves up a giant collection of surf music including hits from the classic early 60's surf bands like: The Ventures, Lively Ones and Bel-Airs to the scorching sounds of Dick Dale and the band's namesake Link Wray. Covering surf classics like: Pipeline, Baja, Miserlou and Walk Don't Run '64 to their surf-istic take on classic lounge hits like Henri Mancini's A Shot In The Dark and Sid Ramon's Music to Watch Girls Go By, Roger & The Wraybands take their audiences on a joy ride through time with wild music, as popularized in the movie Pulp Fiction. Just when fans enjoy a taste of some mellow surf tunes, such as from the 60's cult classic surf movie The Endless Summer or Midnight Cowboy; watch out! Because things heat right back up with Roger & The Wraybands' powerful renditions of tunes by modern surf legends Los Straitjackets, Laika & The Cosmonauts, Satan's Pilgrims and others.

Don't forget there's a new food and drink menu and happy hour specials in the bar as well. Saturday night the drink special is a Mai Tai w/ collector mug for $15, that's right, for $15 you get the drink and you keep the mug! Backed by Libby (keys) Danielle (drums) Bryce (bass) and Meredith (guitar) along with Laura (backup vocals and percussion) add to their ‘wall of sound’. The live show has got it all; the songs you love as well as rare gems you can’t believe you’ve never heard. Don’t forget about the eyeliner, coordinated dresses, big hair and heels baby. The Vallures are alright, uptight, outta’ sight and will have you singing and dancing all night!

Come on out and see The Hot Rod Hucksters rip it up in their very first appearance at the Chef on Saturday July 21st.

Here's their story...

It has been said that all rockabilly music sounds the same, but The Hot Rod Hucksters have been playing truly unique music since 2003. The band is comprised of four hard working guys from Chicago who call to mind an unholy amalgamation of Eddie Cochran, Johnny Burnette, The Cramps, and sometimes even the Stray Cats. Neo-Rockabilly, or whatever you want to label it, the music speaks for itself.

The band's loyal fans have seen them play with hard rocking psychobilly bands like The Quakes, Rocket 350 (Atlanta) and Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz (Vancouver), and traditional rock-a-billy bands like The Hi-Qs (Detroit), Cave Catt Sammy (Texas), The Riptones (Chicago), The Reverend Horton Heat, Lee Rocker (of the Stray Cats), and Robert Gordon And The Gang They Couldn’t Hang (featuring Chris Spedding of Roxy Music, Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols and Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats) and The Brian Setzer Rockabilly Riot!

In February 2005, the Hot Rod Hucksters released their seven song EP "Four Deuces and 3 Gears," a title that references their passion for hot rods (all of the boys have at least two). The CD includes four original songs and three covers, and it reflects the band's diverse influences from blues, classic and alternative country, surf, and of course, rockabilly and psychobilly. Their second disc released late in 2007, “Beer, Songs, and Mediocre Broads” features 12 songs that are sure to have you tapping your feet, spinning a wrench and dancing with your favorite gal.

In 2010, they made a pilgrimage to Sun Studios in Memphis to record their latest cd, Party at Sam's Place.

Be sure to check out the new food and drink menu, plus specials in the bar as well. Saturday night the drink special is an Easter Islander Glass w/ Tropical Drink of Choice for the patriotic price of $17.76.
