What's the name of my piece?

Pages: 1 11 replies

Hi folks! I am new to this forum, and I'm seeking information on a piece of Witco that I inherited from my father. My father had this piece hanging in his office since the mid to late 1970's. I've tried to find the name of this piece on the internet, but haven't had any luck so far. I'd like to know it's age as well. It is signed "Wilrongo" on the front. If anyone has any details (name and age of piece, etc.) I would GREATLY appreciate it. I know absolutely nothing about Witco/Wilrongo, or tiki art for that matter. Thank you!

'FIRE DANCERS'

Yes exactly. Interesting though I have never seen one with background color other than orange burlap. Perhaps bigbrotiki has some insight onto this and other color variations.

Neva seen that version, I am insightless about it, sorry. Maybe they called this one "Water Dancers" :D

Made in the late 60s/early 70s, by WITCO, the signature refers to the owners at that time, WIL liam Westenhaver, RO n Hovde, and GO rdon Robb.

All about Witco in this book:

Too funny! Maybe it's a one-off or test? If Sven has not seen it, I'm surprised it exists.

Thank you for the information! I looked up the Witco "Fire Dancers" on your site and other websites, and yes, I've only been able to find them with the orange burlap background. The one I have is a much deeper shade of turquoise than it appears in my photo - my camera flash washed it out a bit. Wow - it's great to know I might have a piece that is extra special if the experts on this forum haven't seen/heard of it before!

Just thought I'd check back and let you all know that I found another piece just like mine, but with a beige/tan background. It's listed on Ebay for $1,275.00. Seriously? Are these really worth that much?

Well just because someone puts a ridiculous price on it, don't mean it will sell for that. Personally I'm partial to the orange background anyways.

I agree. I'm going to post mine on Ebay for a low starting price and just see what happens. I believe dad only paid $2.00 for it, so if I make more than that, he would be proud.

Well and just when I open my mouth, someone proves me wrong and bought it outright, didn't even make an offer...wow!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? $1275.00?
I would not be surprised to find a little 'fast & loose' going on here.
just my opinion ,I could be wrong.

A little beat up, but a nice price, and free shipping! (not my auction)
