yes, "... of the caribbean"

i hate high pressure sales. they probably make those poor saps walk the plank if they sell less than a specified quota, though.

You shouldn't be patronizing Blockbuster anyway.
If you buy or rent "Pirates" there, you might be getting an edited version.

yesh, going to blockbuster is like instant coffee, it is inferior to the real thing but sometimes its easier... doh i feel the need to go rent several foriegn films at video americain to redeem myself :P

does blockbuster sell edited stuff? i know evil empire walmart does...

as an added nerd note:
at 1:51:45 in the movie, captain jack picks up what looks to be a gold female idol with a moai head.

ok strike that, it isn't a moai head. but it looks like it from the first angle.

I didn't know major retailer chains (video or regular retailers) had edited stuff for DVDs, even major release domestic stuff?!! Could someone enlighten me? Is it specifically limited to Blockbuster and Walmart? So I can get a unadulterated copy at, say, Target?

I was aware of edited movie problems, but I thought it was only limited to foreign films like Jet Li's Hong Kong films.

Please let me know, because I may need to find a new DVD market.

i would assume amazon.com is fairly safe. i would like to believe that target is safe, but i wouldn't put it past them, either. sounds like ms. cynful has more of the scoop, though, which i would also like to hear. ::nudge nudge::

Check out this thread:

I don't know specifically what Wal-Mart's policy is on videos and DVDs.

Blockbuster won't carry any NC-17 rated movies, and some films are edited to remove explicit content.

thanks, c. hm. well, i know that the bruce lee movies i got at walmart have scenes cut. (bruce lee for pete's sake!) i know this because i've seen other versions with those scenes intact. "good times" home video is a specific brand to look out for. this only really affects older movies that have multiple distributors, though.

i'm not going to go into all of the other reasons walmart is pure evil, but i was tempted after reading parts of that thread.

on a depp-ier note, the pirates dvd is a pretty good buy. nice extras - not as hefty a selection as either of the lord of the rings extended sets, but still pretty good.

UJ

i hate pressured sales and I NEVER buy any movies or music that I know would be censored. And if anyone at wal-mart, block buster, or any other company has a problem with it, I will hold them down and make them swab me poop deck.

...argh

editing movies for content??!! Canadian TV is pretty relaxed about stuff like that, I usually know it's a US channel when the swear words or nudity is missing.(maybe it's not like that anymore?)If they're being edited here, it's for length.

I don't believe any of our Blockbusters edit their movies, if anything, that's where you go to rent the un-edited stuff!
Very interesting. We have many new releases being sold or rented with all sorts of un-censored stuff added. It's more like "See what they wouldn't show in the theatre!"

I plan on purchasing Pirates of the Caribbean, I'll have to check it out, just to be sure I'm not being jipped

that's funny - there was just an article in the news today about the widening rift between the US and Canada over stuff like this. the actual examples they used were pot-smoking and gay marriage, but i think this falls under the same kind of stuff. the article was saying Canada's sensibilities were more european.
--NOT TALKING POLITICS-- just sociology.

i told the two canadian girls in my studio today that i'm moving there.

I hear the medical coverage for Canadian citizens is really the best! (if you don't mind waiting 6 months for emergency surgery)

haha!
Good one bong. sad, but true.

Hey now, don't get me started! I'm a happy Canadian, but I am married to an American, so I could go on about this crap forever. Don't tempt me!

I always assumed that all Blockbuster stuff was edited in Canada the same as the US - I heard that homosexual scenes were especially chopped out - but I never watch a movie twice so I wouldn't know for sure. Maybe Blockbuster Canada doesn't edit? I doubt it though - it's the parent company's decision to edit, and has nothing to do with Canadian laws. My guess is, if its edited in the US Blockbusters, it's edited here. It would cost them too much to do it both ways, and they are doing it for their 'corporate image' so I don't see why Canada would still get the naughty bits. Unless Blockbuster head ofice thinks we Canucks wouldn't put up with that silly puritanism.

Vive la socialism! Vive la smoking! Vive la lesbiennes! vive la poutine!

Oh! I'd forgotten that one! Blockbuster doesn't stock gay-themed films. A co-worker of mine tried to rent "Love! Valor! Compassion!" there a couple of years ago and was told that the company didn't condone the homosexual lifestyle. Eeeeeck!

weird! that time when we were trying to avoid being forcefully sold "pirates of the caribbean," we ended up renting a dutch movie about gay/transgendered marriage called "Zus en Zo." maybe foriegn flies under the radar.

yeah, the blockbuster near my old place in orlando had plenty of gay-related films, foreign and domestic. that might have been a regional thing.

they're still evil, though.

there is a cool virtual pirates of the caribbean disneyland ride on disc 2! :)

Veddy interesting....

Is "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" considered gay? I guess it is foreign though.

I know Rodgers has plenty of "Adult" movies, but that's an entirely different company.

Next time I'm in Blockbuster I'll have to ask. Not that they'll tell me anything. :)

That idol was also featured in the opening sequence to Raiders of the Lost Ark... popular idol!

no, that idol was something someone else posted. the one in pirates is different.
:)

all this idol chitchat... :P

mea culpa for throwing the indy idol in there earlier. it was just odd that i was thinking about the indy idol the day before you posted re: the pirates golden idol, and i got all idoled up. got my whiplash smile going and everything.

but seriously, now i'm psyched to rent this dvd. the pirates of the caribbean ride is my favorite ever. i rode it twice in a row at disneyland. I WANTS ME DUBLOONS!!!

**WARNING I AM DRUNK8

I hate to bring up lack luster video, but what was funny when i worked there was the porno watchers. they would always singleing me out. the conversation would go like this:
((customer does the looking around thier sholder and in a low voice))
"um escuse me sir"

  • yeah?
"uhm, where do you keep your .... pornos?"
  • "well we are a family oriented busines and we condone those types of entertainment"

:\

  • but we do have some, what i call ultra soft porn... or if you go down the street to the "movie store" go throught the swingin doors and tell them John sent you.
if they don't have what you like, you can go to "astro video" and go throught the beaded curtain and behind the false wall and you can rent some there. If you are looking to purchase any you can go north up I45 and go to D.W.'s (the unoffcial international house of porn), it's on the edge of Alma.

the otheres where
((customer swings the door open, pops head in and yells at the top of their lungs))
"HAY!!!"

  • what?
    "HAY!!"
    -WHAT!?
    "YOU GOT THEM THAR...RASTLIN VIDEOS??!!"
  • yeah in the sports section next to bull ridding and dirty line dancing

sigh, any thing to pay rent and booze in college
