Aloha all,

Friends of mine are going to Australia next week. They will be there for 2 weeks. They will traveling with some friends of theirs all over Australia. They have told me they will look for a couple of mugs for me. Does anyone know of a tki bar or shop that has their own local mug?

Thanks, Mike

Here's a few to explore:

Hula Bula Bar

http://www.hulabulabar.com/

LuWow Bar

http://carelessnavigator.com/adventures-in-paradise/2011/08/luwow-opening-details/

I think LuWow is using the Hula Bula mug in the interim till they get their own mugs made, though.

This one looks fun, but not sure if they have a mug:

Deville's Pad has a mug, but it's a devil girl mug designed by Derek Yaniger/made by Tiki Farm.

Anyway, that should give you a start.

The "Devilles Pad" mug is made by Tiki Farm and is one of the ultra cool mugs
from Oz, get one if you can! very rare here in the USA

Oooh new bar in the Melbourne area! Must visit after we've moved to Asutralia - we arrive in Brisbane next month!

Josh Collins needs to get some bars open in QLD! Love his style. However - South London Pacific is in the UK, not Aus ;o)

I was looking at this link for Wonder Bar Design and saw them all lined up and thought they were in the same country.

I thought it strange that the South London Pacific seemed to be in Australia...but the UK makes more sense! :)

Thanks for the catch.

No worries! Heehee, I guess SLP is outside of Josh/Wonderbars usual catchment area. Beautiful bar and well worth a diversion south of the Thames while in London.

I really think Brisbane could do with a touch of Wonderbars magic. But then I am biased! Great to see another reason for a trip to Melbourne in the near future. And Perth!

What cities are your friends visiting TikiPops? Trader Tom pretty much covered it.

Devilles Pad and the Hula Bula bar are both in Perth, Western Australia and both have their own mugs, but they are the only ones unfortunately. The LuWow is in Melbourne, Victoria and will have it's own mug at some stage but as Trader Tom mentioned they are using the Hula Bula mugs at the moment. They are not advertising them for sale but if your friends ask nicely and let them know they're from overseas i'm sure they'll sell some to them.

There is the Tiki Lounge and Bar (http://tikiloungeandbar.com) also in Melbourne but they don't have a mug.

And unfortunately, that's it. :( I did read the other day somewhere that a Tiki Bar has just opened in Sydney, New South Wales but i have no idea what its name is. I can't imagine they'd have a mug though.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm not sure of everywhere they are going. I know going to see the Great Barrier Reef & they mentioned Queensland. I'll give them the links to these places & see if they'll be near any of them.

Thanks again, Mike

yeah - it's near Bondi Beach, I think - though I also cannot recall the name at the moment.

KoopKooper mentioned that place in the Tiki Music forum, Kongs Jungle Lounge.

I was just thinking about my time on the Gold Coast and one day, after work, stopping
for a few beers at a polynesian themed restaurant...
I think it was out past Movie World on the Pacific Motorway or maybe on the Gold Coast Highway,
can't remember exactly, anyway the place was built with large poles, thatch etc. and I
seem to recall Tikis, in the Kiwi style. A bit vague but it was 17 or 18 years ago.
I don't think it has been mentioned on Tiki Central, anybody know about it?
Maybe worth a visit if still there.

  • I thought at the time that it was in an unusual location and that they would have had
a lot more business if they were closer to the coast.

Must have been the restaurant referenced at the following link - Pacific Lagoon http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/~dtmatenga/Kenaninui/kenaninui.html

Unfortunately it seems no longer to exist. I could only find some holiday apartment place called Pacific Lagoon. Shame.

Sling Lounge is the only tiki-ish place in Brisbane I've encountered in my research - http://www.slinglounge.com/. Well, the menu features a few tiki drinks at pages 34-36 - yes, it's a huge list! Interestingly the Zombie, credited as the Don The Beachcomber recipe, is actually the 1950 one, and not the 1934 recipe Beachbum Berry has identified as the definitive Don one. Which is good, 'cos I love the 1950 recipe! (guess who attended Beachbum's Zombie seminar complete with Zombie tasting in Berlin on Sunday?!)

K

That must've been the place cathuna.

I contacted the Kenaninui dance troupe via email and they kindly replied
with the information that the Pacific Lagoon was bought by a consortium
who turned the restaurant into a tavern called "Trader Dukes".

I had a look around via Google Earth at street level but couldn't see
anything, can't find any pictures on the internet either.

edit:
Comes up in Google Earth as Hollywood Plaza Tavern, 22 Siganto Dve. Helensvale,
same address given as Trader Dukes.
Behind the tavern you can see the green roof with the two circular sections incorporated,
I think this is the place I visited.

Good research komohana! What a shame, sounds like it was in the style of the tiki palaces that once graced many American cities! May be worth a visit if we're in the area. Trader Duke's is quite tiki sounding actually, but doesn't sound like it's that kind of gaff sadly.

Kongs Jungle Lounge in Bondi (Sydney)
http://kongsjunglelounge.com/

A mate went there recently. Decor got two thumbs up, drinks one thumbs up, and music was so-so apparently.

OOh - Captain Dan's Tiki Bar, Gold Coast? Anyone know of it? This is all I've found: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Captain-Dans-Tiki-Bar/197689630260643#!/pages/Captain-Dans-Tiki-Bar/197689630260643?sk=info

Have thought to mention the Tiki Beat bar at the old Newport Hotel in Fremantle, Western Australia, a number of times -
I don't think it has been reported on before? - but for various reasons never got to it.

http://thenewport.com/bars/

I did take some photos - on several visits - but for the life of me can't find them, will update this post after my next visit there.

Here's a pic taken in my bar of a poster I got from there a while back -

Nicely decorated and featuring carvings by Marcus Thorn, the drinks are...ok... but tend to be mixed with their own
brand of spiced rum... and the clientele seem to be the same that have * always * haunted the New-y.

Worth a visit though if you happen to find yourself in Freo.

Also, if you're looking for mugs, try the Outre Gallery - who also have stores in other Australian cities - ours is located at 260 William Street, Northbridge.

They carry * some * Tiki-Farm stuff but mostly mugs made in Spain etc.

Some pictures I took there a few years back -
