The historic Mai-Kai Polynesian restaurant in Fort Lauderdale ghoulishly presents its fourth annual Hulaween party in the crypt of The Molokai bar on Friday, Oct. 26, from 5 p.m. into the witching hours. Featuring special fiendish performances by South Florida’s rockabilly zombies, Slip and the Spinouts, the event will also scare up a costume contest, special cocktails, and a retro-themed pre-party. Happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. will include a salute to the 55-year history of The Molokai hosted by The Atomic Grog. The nautical theme and decor was added in 1970, but the original bar opened in 1957. This legacy will be honored during Atomic Retro Happy Hour, when a long-lost cocktail from the 1950s will return from the grave for one night only. To set the mood, there will be vintage mid-century tunes plus Halloween classics to get you warmed up for the party. Slip and the Spinouts take over at 7 p.m., knocking the crowd dead with their roots rock originals plus their own takes on classics by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Dick Dale, the Ventures, Hank Williams Sr. and many more. Details on the costume contest and prizes, plus a rum sponsor and special cocktails, will be announced soon. I'm pleased to announce that the classic cocktail to be served at the Hulaween party will be Last Rites, which appeared on the original 1956 menu but was later removed. You may have seen it in Beachbum Berry's Sippin' Safari. It will be fun to taste the original recipe as made at The Mai-Kai. YOUZER...that poster is some awesomeness. Will you be selling posters or since you posted artwork, can we print them out? I would love to have that one in my lounge. |

The artwork is a painting by "Pooch" called Franken-Tiki Island. The poster will be a limited run of 30, 13x19 on card stock, and I should have some in hand next week. I'll try to save some freebies for the folks who show up early to the pre-party. If you can't make it, drop me a personal message and I'll try to hook you up some other way. If there's enough demand, I'll have some extras printed. FYI, if you dig the painting, you can buy a print directly from Pooch at his website: As for Slip, he's a fixture at The Mai-Kai and elsewhere in South Florida, and the Spinouts are one of the hardest working bands on the bar circuit. Find them at http://slipandthespinouts.com or http://www.facebook.com/slipandthespinouts Here's a photo from last year's Hulaween: Mahalo! |

I'm really hoping to make it this year! All I need is a killer costume and hopefully I can convince someone to come with me :) And totally echoing that the artwork is insane! I would love to have that hanging on my wall! [ Edited by: hala_kahiki 2012-10-01 20:46 ] |

Here's another update, plus a few photos to get you in the mood ... Another special cocktail has just been introduced in honor of Hulaween: The Captain Morgan Black Barrel is a new take on The Mai-Kai's classic Barrel O' Rum featuring Captain Morgan Black. You can actually get the Captain Morgan Black Barrel now in The Molokai bar. Or, if you prefer, one of these tried-and-true classics: The always popular Black Magic ... And Bora Bora, now even better with the recent addition of Lemon Hart Demerara rum ... Get all our cocktail ratings here: Coming soon: A sneak peak at the Last Rites. |

The Atomic Grog had the opportunity recently to get a preview of the Last Rites and we weren’t disappointed. You’ll definitely want to try this potent concoction, which ranks right up there with the Zombie and Special Planters Punch as a classic tropical drink ... Last Rites is a very sour and exotic drink with a distinctive flavor from the The Mai-Kai’s house falernum. It’s a bit different than the recipe in Sippin' Safari (there are multiple rums), perhaps tweaked in the 1970s or ’80s to reflect changing tastes. Check back for a new review after Hulaween. And don't miss the Atomic Retro Happy Hour starting at 5 p.m. featuring a playlist like nothing you’ve ever heard before, covering 50 years of music from the 1930s through the 1980s. The tunes will include vintage jazz and swing (Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Artie Shaw), exotica (Martin Denny, Robert Drasnin), mid-century lounge (Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini), roots and rockabilly (Wanda Jackson, Johnny Cash, Link Wray), classic surf (Dick Dale, The Ventures), ’60s rock and garage (Rolling Stones, The Who, The Sonics), and early New Wave (Ramones, B-52s, The Cramps). Mahalo and see you at Hulaween! |
