I love Grieg's "Hall of the Mountain King"
A few surf bands have also covered it.

Not spooky per se, but dark, evil, n heavy
Holst's Mars suite would be cool to add to the list above.

Have you ever seen an Orchestra do that live?

Hall of the mountain kind would be excellent for not only a surf band to play, but also a metal band...has that kind of a riff....

I have played the Holst before, that's truly a classic!

Another good one (we played this one last year) is one you will remember from chorus, Jeff....

and my personal favorite:

Then there is the highly recognized perennial favorite Toccata & Fugue in d minor by J.S. Bach (I have to say, that's one hell of an organ in that video).

For a composer with such a significant percentage of the body of his artistic work being church/religious music, I find it quite ironic that one of his most recognizable compositions is inextricably linked to the spooky horror genre.

I love good church music, Bach composed some of the best, and many of his compositions for organ transpose well into fully orchestrated pieces, this being among them.

TM

Agreed!

Bach, as some people know, was really known as a kick-ass technical organist back in the day...the man with the "flying feet"....and didn't get really famous until much later, and posthumously...

I love the scene in "20,000 leagues" with James Mason playing that particular piece you mentioned.

Sounds like a good show. But nothing by Krzysztof Penderecki? Probably too scary for the kids. Some of his stuff worked good in The Shining though.

Camille Saint-Saens 'Danse Macabre' is my favorite classical Halloween piece.

They kind of want to keep it light hearted!

There is stuff by Xenaxis or Lygeti that would probably cause people to run out, screaming.

Holst, "The Planets" is a great work!

Yup, good enough to inspire a young English blues band called Earth
To change their name to Black Sabbath, and use part of the Mars Suite
As the main riff for the song Black Sabbath.

"What is this, that stands before me.
Figure in black, points his finger at me."

None more evil indeed.

Never did that song, I was in an acapella chamber singer group.
But I did see it performed live one time. Gave me goose bumps.
