"Riding Giants" was co-written and directed by Stacy Peralta, an award winner here for his 2001 skateboard culture documentary, "Dogtown and Z-Boys." Peralta's new work tells some of the history of surfing but focuses on the specialty of riding mammoth waves that can tower 60 to 80 feet high over the ocean surface. The film tells of a pack of southern California surfers led by legendary Greg Noll who pioneered the sport on the north shore of Oahu in Hawaii. It traces surfing's evolution through the exploits of Jeff Clark on the big waves in northern California and onto a new breed of surfer like Laird Hamilton who use techniques of wind surfing and snowboarding to conquer ever bigger waves. |

Would love to see it right now to raise the stoke level... we're iced in on the Great Lakes... no surf until at least March... |

Hey - we're about 6 months behind on our Netflix viewing (we've had RAY since about March) BUT - we watched this movie last night, and it's great! Really nice home movies, and archival stuff, great music, and really cool interviews with the pioneers of big wave surfing. Bob Noll is so old school cool, the Mavericks guys are INSANE and Laird Hamilton, I don't know, he's pretty extraordinary! We're not even into surfing and it was totally entertaining, the cinematography is beautiful. Definitely worth checking out! |
