Tiki Oasis 14: "Beat-Tiki" weekender offers a unique pairing of the Beatnik and Tiki ethos. Like the Beat Generation of legend and lore, today's Tiki aficionados are drawn to primitivism and thirst to reconnect with the primal past, celebrating it in a modern context. Spend a carefree weekend in an urban oasis amidst fellow barefoot bohemians, reveling in the kind of art, music, literature and mixology that is sure to flip your lid!

Tiki Oasis' "Beat-Tiki" weekender will quell your wanderlust, quench your thirst, and leave you with life-fulfilling memories.

In the spirit of Beat literati, The Beat Museum (San Francisco) will host a pop-up bookstore as well as an expanded booksigning event. There will be several scheduled and spontaneous poetry readings by well-known and unknown authors and poets. And we have increased the number of educational symposiums: Learn about the proto-hippie, flute-playing poet, composer, naturalist, and urban explorer Eden Ahbez with researcher/author Brian Chidester; The heart of the Venice Beach Beatnik scene is examined by author Domenic Priore; Beat era artist, original Disney Imagineer, and creator of the Tiki Room Tikis, Rolly Crump, shares his thoughts; Author/curator/world renown Tiki expert Sven Kirsten; Mid-Century/Hanalei Hotel architect John Mock; Charles Phoenix and many more.

You aren't kidding! I was on the final confirmation page during check-out of a stage view room and the room disappeared. So for now we have the golf course side.

Nonetheless, tickets purchased and hotel booked. See everyone in August.

kevin

link's not working yet?

Links are live. And if you're looking for a stage view room, keep trying. I had a stage view room with 2 queen beds open up as I was refreshing the reservation site. So stage view it is! I'm ready to pack up the lead sled!

Thanks for the tip, Kevin.

I booked Golf view because that's all that was available - Read your post then went back to change, refreshed a couple times & "stage/pool view" came up.

Cool, Daddio!

I'm in. Looking forward to going this year. :D

Dealing with the constant refreshing and panic when you see a JAVASCRIPT: VOID error when trying to reserve a room is like totally squaresville, Daddy-O!

Mission Accomplished.

I just learned of this and we booked flights and hotel rooms. Can't wait. It looks like such fun. Any advice for a few newbies and first timers to tiki oasis?

Join the Facebook group -- just search Tiki Oasis--because the majority of information will be posted there.

As far as advice :

Go easy at The Bali Hai (thursday's meet and greet) because if you drink the cocktails are STRONG and will sneak up on you. Nothing worse than starting the weekend off with a major hangover.

Drink water--lots of it!

Bring sunscreen--the San Diego sun can be brutal and even if you don't go swimming you will be running back and forth from inside to outside and you will get burned

Bring an extra empty carry on for stuff you buy. You can always ship it home too.

Room parties are the big draw at Oasis -- they happen at night in the big suite rooms so check the elevators for flyers adverstising room #s/theme/start times. Don't miss Tiki Hell--BEST room party every year!

Tiki Oasis is full of the friendliest people so talk to folks every chance you get. This is no time to be shy :)

Also check out threads on past Tiki Oasis events on Tiki Central to get an idea of the event as a whole.

I love City Lights Bookstore. I met Allen Ginsberg there and took a photo with him and he signed a book for me. I have a Minor in Creative Writing from UC Berkeley and took a couple of classes in prose in the mid-90's.

Maybe you'dike to read poetry at Tiki Oasis?

I'll try to scrounge up some of my stuff and see.

Just. Enjoy.

It looks like I can only book for one day (at the Crowne Plaza) - either Thursday or Sunday. I have not seen a notice about rooms from the Tiki Oasis newsletter subscription. :(

Rooms at the Crowne Plaza are in fact sold out for Friday and Saturday. There are often cancellations around the cancellation date. We also have a group rate at Comfort Inn. About a 15 min walk. And Kings Inn. Home of the Waffle Spot

Thanks for letting me know about the possibility of cancellations. I booked the other days at the King’s Inn (though they didn’t have the Tiki group code in place yet).

This will be my first time attending and I want to get the most out of the experience. Can’t wait!

Hey GROG,

You should have a space to separate the dashes after the corrected word, like this:

QUICKER ------ The Spelling Police

Better:

"QUICKER"

  • The Spelling Police

From your helpful pal,

  • Cammo

I am over the moon excited. My husband and I have been working on ideas for our room party and I'm already starting to train for the 5k I hope to do Sunday morning.

SYMPOSIUM TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE
http://www.tikioasis.com/2014/symposiums/

This year we have worked really hard to stack the deck for the last day of the weekender.
Of course we have Charles Phoenix. We have also added Architect John Mock - the guy who did all of the exterior Tiki decor and every Tiki renovation for the Hanalei. We also have Brian Chidester and The Millionaire presenting extremely rare and untold history of proto Exotica poet and musician Eden Ahbez. And to top it off we have a cocktail symposium with authors Derek & Clint.
Symposium tix are on sale here

Then the grand finale of the weekender - Tiki Oasis is proud to announce Sunday Sixties showcase with The Standells and Love Revisited and The Loons
"Sunday in the Garage" is the closing party to the Tiki Oasis weekender. Tickets are available as a package for the whole weekend or for one night only. If you have already bought a three-day pass and want to upgrade to an all-weekend pass we can help you do so (reply to [email protected])

The Standells are a cornerstone of 1960s punk/garage music with their hits "Dirty Water" and "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" But their crowning glory for the L.A. rock n roll scene was their opening scene footage and soundtrack work for the B-movie quasi documentary "Riot on the Sunset Strip"
Their first major performance was in Honolulu at the Oasis Club. I'm not making this up!

Love was the biggest, most respected band on the L.A. club scene a the zenith of that creative musical explosion in 1966. For example, even though The Doors had a number one hit record they continued to be the opening band for Love in Los Angeles.

Original lead guitarist Johnny Echols is supported by seasoned Baby Lemonade crew who backed Arthur Lee.

The Loons
Local luminaries The Loons include Mike Stax, former member of The Tell-Tale Hearts and founder of Ugly Things magazine, and Anja, former member of London garage Go Go band The Diaboliks and current member of 60s girl group The Rosalyns. The Loons are all set to launch their fourth album this summer.

I'm really digging this cover of this version of William Burroughs' "Junky," man. Looks almost Witco-inspired. Anyone have any ideas? Might have to make some Burroughs-themed pendants to shuffle around with...

Someone generously posted "unofficial mixes" of thematically-appropriate music for (at least) Tiki Oasis 11 and 12 (I'm listening to the one for 0012 now and having a serious spy flashback). Radio Free Bakersfield has done a couple of preview shows in the past as well.

Anyone know of a mix/preview for Tiki Oasis 14 that exists out there in the ether?

Mahalo,
