I'm shocked that no one has posted this yet...

I was going to do it, but thought surely someone had already.
Happy Birthday Thor Heyerdahl "October 6, 1914"

Great google doodle.

Thought I'd grab it before it disappeared.

Looks like this was the default google page in Europe,Russia, parts of Asia, Africa and Argentina but not in North America or most of South America. Whats up with that? Thanks for bringing it to our attention atomictonytiki.

So who did the artwork for this, Pretty cool

Not even shown in Peru (but Argentina?)! Yeah, what's up with that?
And you can't tell if it was the doodle for anywhere in the South Pacific.
But, curiously, parts of Africa, not all of Europe, and various far-flung locales.
I guess big data knows where people are interested in him, but really?

FWIW, we noticed a dateline/time zone effect. This doodle was up in Japan (google.co.jp) before the US, but then that's because Japan was already onto that date while US time zones were still on the previous day. So then it's possible that at any given time, some versions of the site intended for different locations on the earth might have it, while others don't. At least that could be a partial explanation.

PD

When you placed the windows pointer over the Moai, it was excavated in stages, showing the entire body under the ground.
