This tang mask went to Russell and Liz at Lei Low.

4' marquesean w/shrunken head in his new home...

T

home at last! he looks mighty fine!

Was flipping thru some tiki oasis pics tonight and I noticed this carver lurking in the background...

Who could that be? Wait here's a better shot...

EJ

Thanks Jay, you caught me trying to steal all of Crazy Al's good ideas.

I love the simplicity of this piece. It's beautiful. I sometimes get carried away with my pieces and forget that sometimes less is more.

Thanks Tuga and happy new year!

This Moai will be sitting 9feet high behind a rock waterfall... Hopefully have completion pics up next week..

The marq is beautiful. I like the shrunken head too. A nine foot tall tiki sounds like a bear to work with.

Thx Poobah. It's super heavy. A definite beast. Delivering it tomorrow and to be honest I'm not looking forward to the haul. I'll be glad when he's up and secured.

Stained, sealed, and drying...

I really like it. Especially dig that minimalist body...really cool...

Very nice carve, I like it.

5 foot Ku. Still trying to get better. Despite how hard I try I always see imperfections. Aggggg!!!

S

He looks pretty good to me.

Every carving is practice for the next one.
May be next time you'll get that detail right.
You know you get extra credit for
every hole you punch thru a Tiki.
don't ya?

Your very good at what you do. This guy looks perfect to me so keep going. Every tiki I've ever done has a flaw somewhere, but is only noticed by people when I point it out to them. I wouldn't want my pieces to look like they where massed produced by a computer and not a labor of love by the artist. Stay tiki my friend!

Aloha Texas Tiki, I know you see them but I don't see any imperfections and I like this piece. Like Will says just keep on carving, we like what we see.

Lovin' this one Jay. You going to Lei Low tonight?

I need a lot more time so I can catch up on all the pictures here. Nice work.

Thanks Swizzle, Tuga, Hang10, Willcarve, Hitiki, Cy, Amate, Bamalamalu! Means a lot that you comment. Someday I will do a worthy carving. Until then I thank you for your encouragement.

wow, that`s a nice one!

The colors in the pine are amazing. I'm working on a piece of pine now too and the colors in the wood are beautiful. I look forward to seeing it finished. Are you going to stain it?

S

Very nice! Thanks for the progress shots.

Most likely. I'm not sure what I'm going to use yet. I may try some shellac or some oils this time.

Hey rioturban seagoat and Alohastation. Thanks for looking and chiming in!

Well here is the finished product. Tried a few different finishings but wound up with a light coat of red oak topped with some amber shellac. Thanks BigT for your help and tips! As usual I still see lots of imperfections but overall I think it came out ok. The motorhead skull was what Mark at Howie's wanted. Personally I like it as I'm a fan.

Lemmy'd be proud of you mate, nice!

H

Nice tiki.

T

i think the stain came out just fine. nice work. did u add shellac coat?

Thanks y'all!

Big T yes I wound up just letting it cure for a few days and I did some light sanding over the Marquesean cross to lighten the background of it a bit. Afterwards I dropped a new coat of Amber shellac which I think helped balance out the color...

Prepping up for a vend at Lei Low this Sunday...

That last one needs to spit out water.
